Howdy,

I grind alot of Carbon Non stain resistant steels,,,,I dont know if this has been talked about before but,

if say you use a ,5 gallon bucket to hold water in to Cool your blades while grinding,

If you put about a 1/4 of Dawn dishwashing liquid into the water,it will keep the Grinding Dust and grime at the bottom, and not all over your blade when you Dunk to cool it off.

Also I Put in about a 1/2 cup of Baking Soda
this stops the Carbon steel From Rusting and Corroding on you during the Constant Grinding and Dunking to cool times,, i have taken 5160 blades right out of the water
and laid them bare on the bench over night and the nex morning i had no rusting.

Interesting isnt it.. and the funny thing is the blade just looked bare.

anyway there is my tip.

Take care,,,Allen

I use the liquid dish detergent trick as well. I had not heard about the baking soda though. That is interesting indeed. Thanks for the tip.

The liquid dish soap serves another purpose as well. During the summer it keeps mosquitos and the various single cell organisms from growing.
I hate it when my shop is full of mosquitos and smell like a grade school biology experiment.

I'll try the dish soap for the mosquitoes. I had mosquitoes in my shop until December. My wife is going to find me sucked dry by them one day. I've tried everything else.
Thanks

Thanks for the baking soda tip!!! I was just working on a 1095 blade today and practically watched rust grow before my eyes! Look out rust, here comes Cow Brand!
