I haven't found it yet!
I'm thinking I want one with a clip point and a sheepsfoot/wharncliff.

MADE IN THE USA with less than 2.5" blades and good steel that holds an edge (my sharpen-fu is poor).

slim and easy to forget it's in my coin pocket or watch pocket, yet long enough to not get lost in my hand.

I'm guessing a stockman might fit the bill, and a peanut too small?

your comments are most welcome!

A Case Wharncliffe Mini-Trapper might be a good choice for you, if you want a Clip & Wharncliffe blade combination. 3-1/2" closed, blades come in at 2-3/4". A 1/4" over your specs, but if you can work with that, you'll have yourself a winner. Oh, and it won't be your last, believe me.

Here's a thread on one another member bought, but you don't have to go for the purply-girly color. :D

thx orca! That looks like a great knife! I suppose I could buy one and take off 1/4" off the blades, and still have a mighty fine knife. I like the pic of the handle in hand.

the 2.5" is for California UC campus legality, and as of now, my boker subcom is the only blade I have that conforms.

sigh, back to studying (finals week)

CV mini trapper is good to start

2 carbon blades, 3,5" closed and the yellow handles are cute to the non knifeys
price is right at like 35$

or a GEC calf roper if you like stockmen

both have easy to maintain steel and hold pretty well

Case Sway Back Jack or Tiny Trapper wharncliffe will get you under the 2.5" (the Tiny Trapper might be too small though). The clip blade on most any 3.25" stockman should come in right at 2.5", plus a sheepsfoot and a spay/pen blade. Case 6344, Buck 303, Moore Maker 3300, Queen small stockman, to name a few examples. A 64052 congress will give you a spear and a sheepsfoot under 3.5", as well as a pen and coping blade, or find a 62052 half-congress which'll have the sheepsfoot and pen. Find a vintage one though, with 2 backsprings (one for the half-congress), NOT the newer ones with 4 (2) backsprings. The blades on those are way too thin, IMO.

I would advise against shortening the blades of a knife even 1/4 like you're thinking with the Mini Trapper. Taking that much off could expose the tip if you do it wrong, and you probably wouldn't like the way it looked if you did it "right", unless you had a professional do it, but that'd be getting costly. Might as well get something that fits without modification.

I'd also recommend the #66 Calf Roper only the main clip comes in just over 2.5". The #66 Jack has the same clip blade. If you want something really small, you could try a #33 Conductor. Here is an example with a Coping blade secondary instead of the normal pen. The clip comes in at exactly 2.5" and its a single spring design. Most peanuts' clips come in at about 2.125" I believe.

I have somewhat large hands and do not find that the peanut gets lost in them at all. It is the biggest small knife you'll find. The other suggestions here are also great first choices.

Somebody mention peanuts?

Tobotech, the peanut has a boxy shaped handle that lets you get a pretty good grip for such a small knife. With a 2 inch blade, it will handle anything you'll need to do on a campus or elsewhere in suburbia.

Besides, they're so darn cute, even the most liberal college professor will admire it. :D

Carl.

thanks to everyone who has contributed so far!! Ya'll have really cut my knife research time down!
Preliminary in the running:
33 conductor (I like it!)
Tiny Trapper wharncliffe ()
Queen small stockman (D2 blades!)
Moore Maker 3300 ()
Case 6344 (I did 2nd a nice blue one on the xchange for $15!! but alas, no such luck).

the GEC Cal roper looks interesting, kinda new, and havent been able to find much on the blade length.
I really should be getting back to my classes. This thread gives me a little break, and I promised myself I can get one as long as I do well on my final, and submit my papers on time (about 30 pages left to write, 15 due tomorrow).

and for the peanut- they are cute. I'll save that for my 2nd traditional. I know I want more than one color slipjoint

unfortunately, the buck has a Buck 330 2 5/8" blade according to amazon.
CV mini trapper- didn't see it with clip point, looks like a very nice entry to slipjoints, though.
the #66 are just over 2.5" too :(

off to campus, office hours with a liberal professor. Fun times!

The Case Peanut won't be too small for Most of your pocket knife chores.I'm 6'4" with big paws and find the handle to be quite comfortable for its diminutive size. It's the little knife that could.

all the case peanuts I've seen (searched google shopping today) come with a clip and a pen knife.
are they offered with clip and wharncliffe/sheepsfoot/coping blade for secondary blade?

I've never seen one. If I had, I'd have purchased it in a heartbeat. The A.G. Russell Pinched Peanut has a wharncliffe secondary, but these are quite pricey.

Something similar would be a Schatt and Morgan 042155 half whittler. It can be tricky to find, as it was mislabled in S&M's catalog as a 041155 Straight Moose. Searching for either will find the knife. It has a clip main and a coping secondary on opposite ends. I don't know how long the clip blade is though.

The GEC Conductor was 2Dead posted above is very similar, but was a special run of only 25 for another forum, so finding one will probably be difficult.

Case did make an opposite-end pen knife that had a straight secondary blade, but they're uncommon (and I can't remember the pattern number), and I've only seen ones in plastic or celluloid handles.

There's also the Buck 305 Lancer, which is a pretty small knife at 2 5/8" closed. I'd recommend finding an older Camillus made one. Camillus also made the same knife under their own name.

Other than those, there just aren't that many knives out there with a clip primary and straight secondary. Believe me, I've looked.

Regarding the Moore Maker, I'm sending you a PM.

Just a thought: I've turned a few spay blades into pen blades, and a few pen and clip blades into wharncliffe types. (All were previously broken or otherwise damaged.) So, if you're hooked on wharncliffe blades - like I am :D - you can make one out of a small secondary pretty easily.

One other possibility is a Gerber Silver Knight, model 250B. They were made in a variety of handles. It has a 2-/2" main blade and a small sheepsfoot secondary. I will have to take a solo picture, but here is a group shot with the 250B on the far right with pearl scales.

Here is a photo of the Case wharncliffe trappers, with the standard size on top and the mini on the bottom:

and here is a catalog shot of the Schatt and Morgan planterz was speaking of:

If you could find someone willing to sell, the Bladeforums 2009 Barlow would seem perfect.

That GEC conductor up there is a great knife.
