Newbie here..old but new. In my 55 years I've been mostly grabbing guns and such but lately had an itch for blades. Yesterday at a yard sale this layed untouched and I took it home for 2 bucks. Hope it will clean up nicely and it's my first (but not last) sodbuster.

dang they have a strong open and close, eh? Any guess to it's age?

Very nice, Sodbusters are a great pattern

A Herder? What a great find, that one will be tough to beat! Guess you will need to get an old Eye Brand or a new GEC Bullnose to give it high falutin' company ;-)

Nice find. Check with others first, but I think I would use some vinegar to soak and clean the rust.

Welcome aboard. You need a yellow Case CV Sodbuster to go with. :)

If it were I, I would scrub it lightly with a Scotch-Brite pad and WD*40 to remove the red rust. Then use something on the order of mineral oil to lubricate and protect it.

"Mineral oil" gets recommended a lot around here. (It's sold in pharmacies as a laxative.) It's very highly refined (very pure) and won't get gummy over time. Some lubricants will get gummy because they are not as highly refined.

thanks for the tips guys. I can see I picked the correct knife forum to join. Went back to the same sale again this morning and they refilled the junk box. No more knives but picked up a couple other items a buck each. This is my total $4 investment . Wish they wer gun collectors instead..

Awesome find!! The Herders a good sodbuster, been around for a while. The strong open and close could be due to a bit of rust, a little oil may loosen it up a bit but they are tight knives for sure. Hope you post pics after it's all cleaned up! If you ever decide to let it go, I'll double your investment:D

Ok, got her cleaned up.. some of us gun guys have known about a product called Big 45 pad. its a special metal formulated scrubber that is harder than rust but not blue or steel. Great for not leaving any scratches on metal. what else needs to be done to her? Do you guys think this would look good with a pushed patina, onion for example? two light swipes on a diamond plate and its almost shaving quality. dang fine steel.

Just use it to slice stuff regularly, particularly veg&fruit, you'll keep a most desirable patina on it that way.

These Sodbuster knives feel so right in the hand, as a gun enthusiast you should know what that is all about.

Best wishes as it's never too late to turn traditional, Will

This morning I shed my ken onion for my herders sod buster. Has anyone ever installed a "clip" on their sodbuster or do I disregard the 'traditionl' lump in my pants

That thing cleaned up great. I'm sure it'll have years of service left in it. Natural patinas seem to be preferred here, but if you're like me, and impatient you can always set it in a cup of vinegar for several hours. Still, better yet, a natural patina tells a tale.

:eek::eek::eek:
If they did, they would post about it in General instead of Traditional.

Thanks y'all. I find myself taking this outta my pocket and opening several times a day even when I don't need it. High fond lability factor here.

(No I won't be adding a clip to it)

Agreed but that is great find. Congrats! (How come I never find any cool stuff like that?) ;)

That's a really nice find, congratulations! It's cleaned up nice too. Way to go man. I wish I was that lucky with yard sales :D

Just sliced an apple and cheese .. Ill go with the natural patina vs pushed.
