Well, I've finally joined the club and I must say that I'm very glad.
My little Lightweight Calypso Jr. is a treasure.
Now a few observations.
1. One hand opening and closing is really handy. For a guy who's always carried Bucks or Old-Timers, this first one-hander is a kick!
2. The VG-10 blade came out of the box with an extremely sharp edge--as sharp as I get my other knives with a strop. Nice job, Sal!
3. The fit and finish is very good, but not perfect. The swedge on the blade's spine is a little off balance and other grind lines are slightly asymetrical. I mention this only because it could have been better. I've seen much, much worse.
4. The handle material seems very strong for its weight. I like the inverted fish scales.
5. Blending the 'choil' (is that the word?) area from handle to blade in one continuous curve, instead of the abrupt angles of the Delica seems a nice step forward in ergonomics.
6. This is the first inexpensive knife I've owned that seems too pretty to actually get out there and use. It's almost more like an instrument than a tool.
7. I have this powerful desire to go to the local sporting goods store where the owner told me he'd "never heard of Spyderco" and let him compare it against his Gerbers. I think his eyebrows will rise.
8. The packaging could be better. Plain white box. Warranty sheet uses extremely small print and has no pictures to help a newbie through the first one hand open and close experience.
9. The blade lock up is rock solid and wobble is imperceptible.
10. The handle has a very, very small amount of warpage which puts the closed blade ever so slightly closer to one side of the well than to the other.
11. Opening is very smooth and easy, even for a rank beginner.
12. Oh, did I say the blade cuts like a laser beam. Wow!!
More to come if I think of anything.
