Hey guys, I've been lurking here for a few weeks now and I finally mustered up the nerve to post. Yesterday I received my first Spyderco knife in the mail. I purchased a Delica 4 with the plain edged Emerson blade. This is the first Spyderco I've had my hands on for over ten years, which of course was back when I bought knives on a tiny budget and by looks alone. I wanted to share my initial thoughts to prospective first time Spyderco buyers like myself.
Upon taking my new baby out of the box, the first thing I noticed was the FRN scales. The pictures on the net don't really capture the color right. It's a very dark, grayish blue that looks pretty nice. The scales are very light and relatively grippy without feeling cheap, which had been a concern for me. The next thing that caught my eye was the wave on the blade. Its much, much larger than the wave on my CQC-7bw. I immediately wanted to try it out. The blade is waved out without hardly any effort, snagging on your pocket with ease. I decide right now I love this knife.
The ergo on this piece is solid. I have very large hands and it still fit very well. Spyderco's jimping on the blade really adds grip and extends the effective handle on the knife.
My inspection continued. The blade has a nice finish and is super sharp out of the box. I am impressed with VG-10. My wife put it to the test right away and it sliced through her bunched winter hose (she is short and has to cut them down sometimes) like a hot knife through butter. The backlock is strong and there is no blade play to speak of.
The only downsides I could come up with is that I wish the hardware were dark colored like the FRN and I also find the three other possible places I could put the clip look kinda ugly with no clip on them. These are nitpicky issues.
All in all this is a great value knife. I picked mine up for 62.50 shipped and I couldn't be happier. Thanks for reading.
