This Spyderco Police 4 Lightweight in VG-10 just arrived. It's my first Spyderco knife. You may recall from here that I was pondering the purchase and wondering about blade steels.

First Impressions:

1) It's huge. I mean, I wanted a big knife, but this is huge. I'm going to have to learn how to hold it. It's totally huge.

2) The scales and pocket clip are very black. Nice.

3) The bi-directional grip design is no joke. It's grippy.

4) It's tight and solid. That new knife feel. The blade locks open with a loud "click."

5) On the Blade Sharpness Scale of 1 to 10, it's total lunacy. I'm slicing paper like a YouTube sharpening guru.

6) Can't wait to cut something. I'll take suggestions on what to cut first.

7) Did I mention it's huge?

Louie, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship. :D

Congrats on your 1st Spydie purchase!

Watch your step or you will fall down the "rabbit hole" of becoming a Spyderco "collector."

In any event, for the record, while the Police has a very long blade, it is NOT in the context of Spyderco folders really "huge."

As the following photo shows, the Tatanka is REALLY HUGE and (I believe that) it is the largest folder that Spyderco ever made.

pnwqCVT5j

From top to bottom they are the:

C180 Tatanka
C146 Szabo
C142 Resilience
C07 Police
C36 Military
C95 Manix XL
C151 Tuff

This doesn't mean that the Police is "small" by any means but, as a new Spyderco owner, I thought you'd appreciate this additional information.

BTW, other Spyderco folders in the 3.75-4+" range, include (but are not limited to) the:

C10 Endura
C54 Calypso
C59 Shabaria
C63 Chinook
C132 Chokwe
C149 Vallotton
C161 Ulize
C185 K-2
C199 Nirvana
C215 EuroEdge
C218 Opus
C225 Hundred Pacer
C234 Amalgam
C237 Tropen
C238 Paysan

So, there is no shortage of longer bladed folders in the Spyderco catalog. LOL! ;)

The Catcherman is a close second to the Tatanka as is the Spydersaw.

In length perhaps but no where near in terms of overall size, wt and girth.

I owned both the Catcherman and Tanaka b4 and know this based on personal experience.

The Tatanka is a BEAST! I like BIG folders but I thought that the Tatanka was ridiculous (at least as something to carry in your pocket). So, I sold it. Better to carry a 5" fixed blade on your belt instead, if you want to "carry" a knife that big.

The Catcherman is a very thin, light fexible blade for filleting fish. Weight is 2.5oz. The Tatanka weighs in a 9.02 oz -- almost 4x's heavier and far bigger than the Catcherman in every other way.

Sold the Catchman because I don't fish and because it was an "outlier" that didn't fit in any other "category" w/in my collection.

My usual EDC is a Cold Steel Voyager XL with 5.5 " Blade. Second is a 6" Aluminum CS Ti-Lite. I carry the Spyderco Folders when in the jurisdictions where the shorter blades are required and for the novelty. I really like the Police Models and need to get this new one, I have no complaints with the VG 10 and Japanese Quality.

Congrats! I keep seeing good deals for the K390 police come up but never pulled the trigger due to carry size limit here in CT, I'm sad because that's probably one of the sliciest blades made by spyderco!

Yes you did, and that's what she said too.

Good luck with the secret agent gig buddy!

I didn't have a Seki Spyderco up until a few weeks ago. I checked out a Stretch 2 and had to have it. Then I got my wife a purple Delica and me an Endela. Now I have a K390 Endura on the way for my birthday. I REALLY like the Seki knives. VG-10 is pretty awesome, been really impressed by it, and I hear Seki's K390 is amazing so I had to try it. Not really interested in the Police, but I'm sure it's a great knife!

The Police is a great knife, but in my opinion, it is indeed huge, as folders go. Too big for some, just right for some, and possibly a bit small for others, it is a really big knife. I felt the same way about the Military; great but huge. I find the Endura/Pacific Salt to be as big as I want to carry. I will probably try a Police again someday, just to make sure.

Yeah, same here, the Endura/Pacific is right at the limit, and pretty perfectly so, for what I will carry as a folder.
