Hello,

I must admit I have never liked the look of a Spyderco folding knife. That round hole in the blade and the way it is presented in their knife designs has always turned me off.

I also have never had the chance to hold or use one.

With that being said, I would like to try one out to see what all the fuss is about.

I do not want another frame or liner lock. And no autos are allowed where I live. So if you people would give me some info. and suggestions along with pictures, I would appreciate it.

Thank You!

Try a Manix or Sage 3, they both have unique locks. A lot of the Japanese blades have back locks.

More of a potential collector below $200.00

No liner locks

Something unique to represent the brand. Maybe even a large fixed blade?

Thank You

Spyderco makes very few large fixed-blades, so that doesn't really represent the brand all that well.

What does is the Compression lock and the Paramilitary 2. It's only about $110 and they're now coming back in-stock everywhere (finally).

If you don't buy one now, you'll end up buying one later :)

I guess I'd go with ericvar101 and suggest a Para 2 since it's pretty representative of the brand (Spyder hole, Spyderco's compression lock, great design and innovation), it's under $200, and it doesn't have a liner lock. They also have a few very nice lockbacks like the Caly 3.

I am looking into finding info on the Spyderco Paramilitary 2 Knife Gray G10 Carpenter Steel Satin Plain C81GGY20CP2

and

Spyderco Manix 2 .. this one say's something about ball bearing lock? Does it have a ball bearing axis also?

We need some pictures. I'm also liking the teardrop shaped hole.

A Para 2 in 20CP is kind of a rare find, and most folks that have one won't part with it.
For your first knife I'd stick with something that is in current production, like the stock Para 2 in S30V.
I'm a fan of the Manix 2, and that one comes in two sizes. Is a a bit heavier than some of your other choices though.
The teardrop holes are on the Byrd knives, which are the entry level price point.
You might want to look at the catalog on the spyderco website to get more details.
Edit: 320 posts since 8/2012 and you haven't bought one yet?

In no specific order....
Sage series
Manix series
Caly 3 and 3.5
Paramilitary and military

Your post sounds like everyone's post right before they buy their first spyderco. Once you get it, you will "get it". You know the phrase "form follows function". Spydercos designs epitomize that expression! Spyderco builds knives that just work! And whatever form that happens to take naturally becomes beautiful once you realize how well it works.

My favorite spyderco is still the dragonfly 2!! No matter what you decide, do yourself a favor and get a dragonfly also! You can get the plain vg10 version for under $50. Or for just a bit more you can get the zdp-189 version. The dragonfly 2 is an extraordinary edc knife!

Is it possible to find out the best place to buy Spydercos from?

Well, here at BF we can only mention paying dealers. My favorite paying dealer and overall one of my favorites is Grand Prairie Knives in Troy, IL or at GPknives.com There are two others that I really like (one has the best Spyderco prices 90% of the time), but they don't pay to be an official dealer here so I can't mention them. If you check out Spyderco.com and browse their forums, or become a member and pose this question you can and will get answers.

Can't go wrong with a PM2, Manix II (XL as well), Gayle Bradley... the list goes on and on :D
Anyhow, here's a shot of some Spyders to help. The herd has morphed, but this is where I was at the beginning of the year...
