I have just gotten into the pocket knife hobby, and was very pleased with my first purchases - A Ka-Bar Dozier Folding Hunter and a Mini Dozier.

But I have heard so many great things about Spyderco knives, so I decided to take the plunge. My choice for my first Spyderco was the Dragonfly 2 (FRN, VG-10) in orange.

Just received it and I am blown away by how great it feels in my hand for such a small knife, and how useful it is as a cutting tool. I just love it, and will probably buy another one in ZDP-189 in a different color.

I know a lot of people love Spydercos, but the Dragonfly is really small and doesn't seem to get as much love as some of their larger knives like the Delica and the Paramilitary 2. Anyone else here love the Dragonfly 2? Also, I would appreciate recommendations on other affordable Spyderco models.

Here are some pics of my DF2.

Nice little knife. Congrats, I think you'll enjoy it. Also, just letting you know that your GPS location is showing on your photos.

For me, anything smaller than Delica, UK Pen Knife, etc... is too small. And I don't have big paws or tackle big jobs in a daily basis.

I think that one of the best ways to get into Spyderco is by means of one of their not-so-expensive flagships, say Delica or Endura (Full flat ground if you ask me) in VG10. Or the equivalent sized ones from the Salt series, if you plan on using arround saltwater.

PM2 or Military, from my point of view, are one step up from the aforementioned couple.

Thanks for your input. Yeah, I will probably get a Delica soon. It looks like a great all-around knife. But I like relatively smaller knives, and the Endura and PM2 seem way too big for me. The Dragonfly 2 is really small, but it seems to perform much larger than its size. I am amazed by how comfortable and useful it is for such a small knife. Also, I generally hate pocket clips and remove them, but the wire clip on the Dragonfly is comfortable and doesn't dig into my hand or ruin the ergonomics, so I think I will keep the clip on.

On a side note, this is an amazing video review/demonstration of the Dragonfly 2 that I just stumbled upon.

Sal calls them 'little big knives' for a reason.
The small Spydies are awsome. Disappear in the pocket, but very capable on many knife tasks.
I carry a Squeek regularly and love the the little guy :D

Dragonfly is a great knife, but a little too small for me. That said, glad you like it and you'll find Spyderco has a lot of different styles with a lot to offer.

People rave about the Dragonfly. It’s decent, but I don’t think it’s their best design in that size. The Meerkat is way better, as is the Copilot.

The Delica is good and a much more usable size if you’re going to be cutting a lot.

The Chaparral is hands down the best small Spyderco. Light, thin, great steel, amazing ergos. Cheap too, a few more bucks than the Delica.

What I really appreciate about many of Spyderco's smaller offerings is that they have this neat trick of creating an area at the butt of the handle that allows me, even with XL hands, to get a 4 finger grip. The Dragonfly and Meerkat come to mind as good examples of what I'm talking about where my pinky falls on that angled flat area under the lanyard tube.

Welcome to the addiction - I Purchased my first Spyderco (a dragonfly) back in the late 90's and I now have over 60 different Spydie knives. :D

Welcome.

My wife loves her Dragonfly, Delica, and Ladybug. They are all great knives, which she won't let me steal. The Dragonfly is on my wishlist right now, along with a PM2 to complement my Manix2 and Persistence.

Great choice, probably the first of toooo many. :)

Enjoy

It's one of my favorite Sypdercos I own as well, I especially love my Salt DF as a backup fishing knife.

Congrats. I like yours better, but I have the black VG-10. I think you will find it very practical and capable, featherweight, and a great all around knife.

Welcome! DF2 is a solid little knife. The ergo is great and it looks beautiful. Since you already have a DF2, I suggest you to consider a Delica 4 zdp-189 for your next purchase (my EDC for the past 12 months). Like a few others, sometimes I feel DF2 is a bit too small for things like breaking down cardboard boxes and cutting apples.

Chapparal is my best small knife. It's the ergos for it's size that make it great

Spyderco actually refers to them as "little big knives". Congrats on your first Spydie! More to come ;)

Great first choice there.

If you like that size Spyderco check out the Urban or Chaparral.

Welcome to the forum and to the knife, rogatsby! Nice choice on the Dragonfly for your first Spyderco knife. It's definetly one of those knives that looks too small until you get it in your hands. If you like the half-and-half finger choil and backlock features, and want something a little larger, maybe check out the Spyderco Native.
