My First Spyderco

Received my first Spyderco last week, a Paramilitary plain edge, and thought I would post some comments. Firstly, as I live in Perth, Western Australia, there are no knife shops that supply any quality new model knives, making it impossible to handle and view before buying, thus all my decisions come from the info I can gain from forums and manufacturers web sites. I purchase my cutlery, online from the USA and have received excellent service. After reading so many good reviews about Spyderco products, I decided to find out first hand.

The Para has exceeded my expectations in many ways, it is ergonomically the best knife I own, fits my hand perfectly, the G10 scales are very grippy, and it is build for cutting and slicing, not for sitting in a glass cabinet. My knives are for using, not for fashion, and the Para is a fair dinkum worker.

The flat ground blade was razor sharp from the box, the first knife I have owned that didn’t require sharpening before use. The Al Mars and Benchmades I own, although great tools, required a bit of work to bring them up to a sharpness level that I like to carry. The blade shape, grooved thumb ramp and of course the trademark hole all flow together, making this a performance tool.

The blade action was a little stiff from the box, but a drop of oil and half an hour of opening and closing has amended this ( most new knives I have owned required this attention ), and will now smoothly open and close, one handed. There is no blade play in any direction and the lockup is solid, the compression lock system is simple, effective and innovative.

The overall fit and finish is spot on, once folded, the blade centres perfectly. My only minor complaint is the pocket clip, the edges are not finished well and are quite sharp. Its a little ironic, I have carried and used this extremely sharp precision build knife in my pocket for a week, but cut my thumb on the pocket clip. I am not sure that NG includes the bandaids with every purchase with this in mind.

I look forward to adding some other Spydies to my collection in the near future.

Hey Stockman,

I din't realise you were a sandgroper. That makes two of us on these boards as far as I can tell. Have you checked out Wellington Surplus on Murray Street? I reckon they have a fairly good selection, although not usually the very latest. Which online retailer did you use? I've used knifecenter a few times myself.

I've been toying with the idea of a Para myself. Although I've just ordered a pacific salt so that will have to do me for a little while.

Gday Ming,
Wellington surplus is the best of a bad bunch, very old stock, their is not a Spydi or B/made their that is a current model and their prices are almost twice the price of what you would pay online from the USA even after the freight. Have used New Graham, normaly takes no longer than a week from placement of order - they are well priced and the service is great. The Para got a good workout over the w/end, the more I use this knife, the more I appreciate its effectiveness.
Sal, your welcome. Thanks for producing a great product.

It's a funny thing about the clips on Spydercos, I'm glad somebody else mentioned them and it's not just me.

I've got 3 of them and I'll probably buy more. Excellent knives but, strangely, the clips seem to be less well finished than the rest of the knife. In my small collection are:

Meerkat. Great little knife but the clip is next to useless.
Native. Also a great knife but the clip has sharp edges and just looks unfinished.
Cricket SS. Another great small knife and the clip is very good. They got it right with this knife but not, it would appear, with the Para, Native and Meerkat.

My Native is one of the very early ones so maybe the clip is improved on later models, don't know.

Maybe all the others are great, don't know, never had the opportunity to handle them. Knife stores over here on the east side are no better than yours in the west.

Stockman,
Nice first Spydie. Been playing with my CC numbered Para and it turned on me while trying the Spydie twist opening. NewSkin is great for the small cuts and stubborn as I am, I will now buy another Para for serious abuse. Good review there.

Gaijinoz,
The clip on my Rookie was lookin' ratty. About 3 months ago, I popped it off and bead blasted it to a satin finish. Looks great now and if it gets scratched or worn all I do is pop it in the Clemco for a few seconds and she's as good as aftermarket new again. Took the Rookie apart and did the same thing to the blade after taping the beveled area off. Doesn't look too bad. Next will be a mirror polish to the bevel. Try the satin bead blast finish on the clip sometime. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Hi Stockman. I got my paramilitary from NG, too. My wife and I both got a laugh out of the band-aids. :D So far my Para hasn't bit me yet. I took the black clip off and traded it with the shiny stainless clip from my Military. I like the looks of the shiny stainless better. The paramilitary has become my permanent EDC, and, as you said, "The Para has exceeded my expectations in many ways, it is ergonomically the best knife I own, fits my hand perfectly, the G10 scales are very grippy, and it is build for cutting and slicing, not for sitting in a glass cabinet."

Great knife, Sal.
