Needed a smaller EDC than I normally prefer (so as not to offend our security sheeple) for opening cases at work and settled on a Dragonfly 2 in ZDP-189. I'll admit I've never been a huge fan of the humpback and Spyderhole, but beauty is as beauty does and I'm "warming" to this knife every time I use it. I typically do not reprofile factory grind angles and assume this steel could be a bear. I do most of my sharpening on a Lansky and I've got every diamond and conventional stone they make right down to the sapphire, although I swear the white stone is finer (although that may come from the considerable mileage I've got on it). If I want to just maintain the factory edge, what angle does Spyderco use?

congrats on the knife, and I believe 40* inclusive is their angle but that isn't for sure.

I've heard 30 degrees inclusive on almost all the spyderco knives but there are a few at 40 degrees or just over. Is the dragonfly one of the exceptions?

According to the sharpmaker video, they set their edge at around 30 inclusive, but they may have a microbevel on it set at around 40. If you sharpen at 40, you should be a-ok.

The goal is 30° inclusive. They are hand sharpened by human beings, so the goal isn't always met, but is generally pretty close to that. It seems like a waste of money to sharpen ZDP-189 at 40°, the steel works well at much lower angles. Sal Glesser once posted that he sharpened his ZDP-189 Delica at 30° on the SharpMaker. Good enough for him is good enough for me.
