I am going to try to keep this short!

I doubt any of you guys remember my first (and only) thread in this sub-forum, it might have been two months ago?.....anyway, I fell in love with "Sodbusters" and had a few questions about options.....

I was really new to these kinds of knives, and you guys where a huge help in giving me those options and things to look at and think about.

I decided to take the patient route (not easy) and spend time reading and learning about what these knives are, and what it was that I really liked and didn't.

Well, I really got into what seems to be what most people like, GEC/Northwoods knives, in Particular, the Barlow's, 15's and 47's...single blades. Hard to get, even on the exchange (you have to be FAST!)

Then I saw a knife that was more than just an opportunity to get my first "traditional" knife.
It was something that encompassed everything I loved about this crazy hobby.
I am not sure what it is about this one?
I've owned MANY knives, seen many more, and (especially these days) I rarely get the feeling that "I have to have this" for all the right reasons...

I think what this knife reminds me of is being a kid, but also of all the days I spend with my children down by the river carving them sticks to play with....

So....I am not keeping this short!

Here are the spec's for those interested:

This knife was made by Mr. Rick Nowland.
Didn't know anything about him before I saw this knife. I can tell you he's a gifted craftsman, and a wonderful Gentleman.

Blade: D2 (2-1/4 inches)
Handle: Gorgeous Mammoth Ivory with 416SS bolsters (3-7/8)

Thanks to everyone in this wonderful sub-forum for the advice, and for taking their time to help a "traditional" noob!

(Sorry about the pics, best I can do with what I have)

Fantastic first traditional. Glad you went the patient route and really sorted out what you wanted in a slipjoint :) I remember that thread well and can say that one is a beauty. D2 is one of my favourites for a slipjoint.

Jeez, what a way to start. I love when mammoth bone has a greenish blue to it... this is a very unique looking knife. Congrats

Wow. One heck of a first traditional!

The porch here just ain't a place to keep things short. It's a place to have feelings, reminders of the the old times sparked by a tool. Welcome to the rabbit hole, tjough Haha.

That is some very nice mammoth.

Wow, what a knife!! That thing is just beautiful. Congratulations on your first slipjoint. I'd say that I hope you enjoy them as much as I do, but seeing the one you got I don't see how you could avoid it.

^^^ Thanks to all for the comments, really appreciate it.

I am not done, this one is just the beginning!

The more time I have with it the more my appreciation grows.
I am going to continue to read and learn, and maybe try to work at being a little faster on the exchange!

That certainly is a great first traditional. It is quite memorable, very 1-of-a-kind mammoth handles. Good luck on the exchange, some of those knives seem to sell faster than lightning can strike.

I recall your thread and have to add my admiration to others over what you picked-well done! D2 is the bomb on trads and mammoth?very nice. Good show man.
Thanks, Neal

How are you going to follow that up??!! Welcome to the club:)

Thanks Ernie!

Really love the TC Madison Barlow in Micarta (who doesn't) so that could be next?
Also really loving swaybacks....

I am trying to not have a plan, just keep looking, and when I fall in love with something, buy it.
(Hopefully I can fall in love with something just a little less expensive for my next one!)
