My first traditional

Hello to the guys and gals of the traditional knife world. This is my first thread here. I just bought my first traditional for myself, a Case peanut in G10. I have a few older Schrade knives that were my grandfathers, and I cannot really bring myself to carry them because I don't want to lose them. So this is the first traditional I am going to carry and use. Now I did do some reading on the forums here and I saw that the G10 and carbon fiber where not well liked on here. I am not going to lie these materials drew my attention to the traditional knives. I am a younger guy and these are the materials on most of my knives now. Maybe this will be a start in a new type of knife collecting for me.

G10 is a great material for user knives. It's definitely impervious to many things that it might come in contact with and very durable. Maybe a little later on in your introduction to traditionals you will be attracted by the sheer variety of handle materials. Enjoy your trip!

Looks great. I much prefer the shield they use on the Derlin and G10 models. I wish they would go to back to that on all of their knives.

Congrats on your first traditional knife, and what a way to start out! That's a fine looking peanut, mine has very quickly grown to be my favorite slip joint. Just be careful, you've just taken the gateway drug ;)

I agree, I think putting these materials on traditional folders is a good business move. It gets younger guys like me to venture into a new realm of knives that we might not have to start with.

Nice choice! That's a really fine looking knife
It'll be interesting to hear your thoughts after you've used it a spell... :)

I got a traditional in a trade a couple of years ago......and have since bought about 15! It adds variety and a different type of utility to your collection.

 and welcome to Traditionals.

The G10 peanut is very sweet. Nice little knives to have in your pocket. I've got 5 or 6 of them now. I'd be afraid to count how many traditional knives I've purchased since I hit this forum, but it is dozens at least.

Nice choice, and I like that shield too. I recently came over to traditionals too, and I bought a Chestnut bone Peanut with the carbon blades along with a large Stockman in amber bone with carbon blades. They are two completely different animals.

I may buy something in stainless with g10 too, I'm worried that I'll drop these bone ones already.

A lot of us here, especially the older guys, including me (51), seem to prefer bone, stag or wood scales.

I prefer them because I like older knives, and that is what they used. That said, I don't dislike more modern materials. There are even a few members who have had custom knives made with G10 or CF scales. I like some G10 and CF, but there aren't many offerings in production knives.
Times have changed. Case makes many different scale options that I really don't care for, but from a business aspect it makes since. If that is what it takes to help them stay around for another 100+ years, I'm all for it.

I too have my grandfathers old Schrade Waldens. I don't carry them often, but there is great satisfaction carrying one of his old knives, that I know he carried for many years.

Congrats on your new knife. Just because some don't like the modern scale materials, it doesn't matter. There is no right or wrong way to collect. Buy what YOU like, and enjoy them.

The aesthetic qualities of black man-made scale covers go back a long way in Case's history, to the black 'composite' handles found on knives produced in the 'XX' era (1940 - 1964), and maybe even earlier to the 1920 - 1940 'Tested' era.

I like the looks of the black G10 on Case's recent offerings, and don't see them as non-traditional at all. The 'classic' old shield style is a bonus, in that regard, and only enhances that perception for me. I view them in a very similar light as the older black synthetic-scaled knives, just that much 'better' in regards to strength and durability. G10 is tough stuff, and it doesn't hurt that it's very attractive as well, especially when polished.

Personally I quite like g10 and love your choice for a first traditional. I also really like micarta. My traditionals all have bone wood or stag, but that doesn't mean I won't get one with a nice micarta handle someday. I do much prefer a good ol carbon blade on my knives though :)
