Split wood with a BRKT Hiking and Camping Forum knife and did the heavy work with it as well. Used a Frosts carving knife and hook knife to do the rest. A bit of sand paper and some Almond Oil (it is what I had on hand) and it was done.

Not sure of the wood - a flowering tree that is very common in Houston.

They look as good or better than a store bought factory made spoon.

You have a talent for wood carving.

Very nice, I can never get the spoon head shaped nice. They usually come out too elliptical and deep. Yours look very good. How do you like the crooked knife for carving the center out? I swear I have 10 scares in my palm from trying to bowl out the knife with my tip and sticking myself as a result.

I don't put my palm under it. ;)

I carve bowl first - and I leave plenty of wood on both sides of the bowl area to grasp. Once the bowl is right - I move into the handle.

Wonderful work you have there, the one in the bottom picture, to the left, I like it very much indeed.

Thanks TF...I'll never post my first spoon on Bladeforum now! Very good job! This is something I want to practice when I get home. Just curious, I see that you rubbed some almond oil in it, has anybody used anything else in the "field" to seal a spoon/utensil before use? I usually have a small bottle of olive oil in my kit...

Very nice my friend. Here is one I banged out in a night by the fire this past summer.

Kevin,

I love the bowl too! Did you make that totally out of fire blown?
