My first two Spydies!

I just received a small brown box this morning. In it were my first two Spydercos: a Native (Combo Edge S30V w/ FRN) and a Manix (Combo Edge S30V w/ G10). All I can say is that these two knives are awesome. Great quality, especially for two production folders. If these two knives are anything of normal Spyderco quality then I will surely be buying many more.

I opened the Native first and flicked it open. I loved how clean and sharp the blade was. It also felt great in my hand. The FRN handle really seems to cut down on the weight. I'd read where a few people complained about the thumb hole being under the handle a bit but this was no problem for me. I was able to flick it open easily. I also noticed that the lock seemed to be very well constructed so I don't have to worry about it closing after I get it open. I was also glad to see that the clip is reversible for left or right hand carry. I knew I had to test out the blade so I grabbed a sheet of paper and stabbed at it a few times: "just like a hot knife through butter." I can't wait to tear into something else. But, I needed to get the "big boy" out first.

Next, I opened the Manix. This thing is massive compared to the Native. It's both heavier and bigger. It's built like a tank. I flicked the blade open which takes a moment longer than the Native because it's so huge. The blade looked sharp, clean, and the edge was perfect. It also felt great in my hand. I couldn't resist. I grabbed two sheets of paper and started stabbing. Just like I imagined but better. :D I love the G10 scales also as they seem to provide a sure grip. I also love how the clip is reversible for tip up or down carry for both left or right hand carry. I think this makes it very versatile. The lock on the Manix also seems to be constructed very well so I shouldn't have to worry about that while I'm attacking another ream of paper.

I'd have to say that the Manix is by far my favorite folder now that I've handled it. Well, that is unless I find another one with...:D All I can say is that you can't go wrong with the Manix or the Native. These are two of the most solid, sharpest and well-built folders I have ever handled. It's hard to imagine that they are production folders when you look at them. I wouldn't feel bad recommending either of these two to anyone who needed a good knife.

Sorry I blabbered on about this but I'm excited and wanted to share the good news. I'll see if I can clean up my digital camera since the memory card was full the last time I checked and maybe get some pictures posted this afternoon. After all, a picture is worth a thousand words. Maybe I should've posted the picture first and then I wouldn't have had to type all this. Oh well, time waits for no man and I was eager to share my excitement. I'm sure you all have felt this way before. At least once, if not several times. ;) Anyways, comments are welcome.

You got two good ones! The Native is my favorite of the small Spydies. It is compact but strong and big enough for most common tasks. The Manix is the new big knife in the lineup. I guess only the Chinooks match it.

One hint on "testing" new knives. Don't stab paper. Even a toothpick can stab through paper. :) Cut it at the edge. With those two knives you can slice strips off.

I guess I worded myself wrong. I actually was slicing although I have no idea why I said stabbing. Sounds a little better I guess. Here are some pics. Sorry they aren't great as I need to figure this camera out but here they are anyways.

I just took delivery on a PE Manix as well. Best folder I have handled to date. Enjoy your new toys...

Any reason why you chose the serrated blades?

I guess I just like having the option to tear through things with the serrated edge although I'm pretty sure the plain edge on the Manix could hold its own. Most knives I own are partially serrated. Gives the knife a "meaner" look I think. Makes it look like it has teeth. :D

Now go for a classic Spydie about halfway between the characteristics of the Native and Manix -- the Military. Big blade, razor sharp, lightweight, great ergonomics.

Since you like serrations so much, I can't resist reprinting this quote from the late, great Gad Blilious.

've done things with Spyderco's I will never tell cause Sal will stop selling them to me. But the funniest thing about them is the patterns they leave when you use the serrated version to spread cheese or butter on a piece of bread.

:D
