My first venture into sheaths

Howdy! I'm glad I decided to poke my head in here. Lots of great looking leather out there!

I've been slapping together gunleather for myself for the past couple of years (gallery), but I just recently ventured into knife sheaths.

I've never been a huge knife buff, but I've got a kydex-equipped RAT-3 I thought could benefit from some decent leather. I'm still tinkering and trying to learn what works and what doesn't. Never did pay a lot of attention to knife sheaths, although I recognized good work when I saw it. I've already decided that another trip to Tandy is in order for rivets and other related hardware.

As an unexpected side-effect, while doing some research online to see what sorts of designs were out there, and seeing all the purty knives that accessorize the various and sundry leather sheaths I've seen, I may have stumbled upon yet another hobby I can't afford.

Anyway, here be my first recent attempts (keep in mind they're pretty quick & sloppy).

#4 (which is in need of a rivet or two):

Those are really good. I like the fact that you take time to put that last 5% finish on them. Straight stitching, smooth edges etc. The number four sheath DOES NOT need rivets, in fact if made correctly, no sheath needs rivets. Come back and participate often.

Those are great! Nice designs, too. I like the simplicity of #2.

That's some fantastic looking gun leather, as well, and a very well-done tutorial.

Oh, and welcome to the forums! :D

Thanks all for the kind words.

I think that's where my problem lies with that particular sheath. :D I've got no welt or anything on this particular sheath, so the blade comes precariously close to slicing the stitching as it is removed and/or inserted.

Still learning, etc... :D

those look awesome!

Nothing "quick and sloppy" about those sheaths...

Well so far it appears you have really learned well. I couldn't tell from the picture that #4 had no welt, but even so that sheath should be sacrificed on the alter of "learning experience". I believe it would ruin the look of YOUR style to incorporate rivets, plus the fact that doing their intended job, they would have to be placed about every inch or so around the "sharp" side of the sheath. Save this one as a sample of the style and put welts in the rest of them. Also please continue to post and share with us. Thanks

"Quick and sloppy" eh? Your opinion, definitely not mine. As Paul stated, no rivets---save them for airplane construction!

Quality makes itself known and yours has been introduced nicely! Keep us posted with your future work.

Here's the latest for my Rat-3. I think with this one, I'm done making sheaths for the Rat. :D

Too hard to pick a favorite. I like the high carry of the first ones and I like the full coverage of the last one. All look great!!

I like your simple , sturdy, made to be used, built like a brick, construction. I'll take that over fanciness every time. I see that in your holster making too.

I also like the para-cord lanyard idea of yours. Functional with the knife, and unravel to use when you need rope, right?
