My first VG10 Blade

Im fixing to get a new knife with a VG10 blade and it will be my first. I've experienced S30V, 154CM, and Elmax and I'll have to say the S30V was the hardest for me to get sharp. The Elmax wasn't far behind. Sometimes I could get it razor sharp, other times just sharp. I've heard rumors about VG10 steel being one of those thats hard to get sharp so im looking forward to testing my skills. Im not bragging but I am very experienced at free-hand sharpening so maybe it won't take to long. I chose the SOG Vulcan VL01 "Razor Edge" because it's something different. I've been reading lot's of information about the Vulcan and it just interested me. My ZT 0566 is still doing good other than the torsion bar broke! My Benchmade Griptilian is still a favorite. It has the smoothest operation of any of my blades. But im looking forward to my new SOG Vulcan. It has so many good reviews I just had to try it out.

I have those steels and find the VG-10 among the easiest to sharpen....maybe like the 154 or only sllghtly more difficult. I've only used stones on it so far and a ceramic for touch up. It should do well under diamond. I like it.

I caught on to the look of the SOG Vulcan only this week...and I'm looking at them. I might see how good the latest SOG's are. So far I like it on paper. Hope you'll let us know how you like it.

I just posted in another thread that what the heck, I'll order one and just keep sending it back until I get a good one.

As I also posted elsewhere today: Where there are springs or torsion bars......

I find VG10 to take a very fine edge.
I don't find it any harder to sharpen than 154CM.

It should be here by wednesday and by next weekend, I'll have a full personal review. You know I just purchased a SOG Flash II and haven't even received it yet when I ordered the Vulcan! After I ordered the Flash II I was looking around and came across the SOG site and the Vulcan just stood out so I blew another hundred bucks to get it. But yes, I will sure let you know what I think about it when it arrives.

All my VG-10 blades are Spydercos, but I find it fairly easy to sharpen. And although I can resharpen my knives without problems, I'm not a 'master sharpener'.

Spyderco's VG-10 is easy to sharpen and can get scary sharp and hold it.

I can agree with everyone else that VG-10 gets stupidly sharp and is not that difficult to sharpen. I find it easier than S30V and Elmax. It holds an edge fairly good and keeping it sharp is not an issue. A little stropping will keep it sharp. I had a Vulcan and sold it to a co worker and he loves the knife and he's not a fan of stainless steels. I still have the mini Vulcan with the black blade, can't bring myself to get rid of it. They are sweet knives.

I so not currently own a VG10 knife, but if I was going to pick one up it would a Spyderco Endura. A friend has one and I am quite fond of it.

I came here to post this. I love VG-10. When sharp, it cuts very aggressively. I find it to be pretty tough, it's good steel. Probably my favorite.

I'm by no means a great sharpener, but I found VG10 much easier to sharpen on the sharpmaker than S30V. But a lot of the perception of the ease of sharpening can be due to blade shape and edge geometry.

I'm fairly new to sharpening, I can get VG10 absurdly sharp with a Spyderco Double Stuff stone and a strop. I also find 154cm fairly easy to get extremely sharp. I can't get my S30v Chokwe nearly as sharp as my VG10 Spydercos. VG10 is probably my favorite steel, it could be the favorable designs it's used on but I really enjoy carrying VG10 and maintaining it.

VG-10 is one of my favorite steels. Takes a hair popping edge pretty easily in my experience (Delica 4 FFG) and holds it for a good while. Performs much better than I ever expected out of a $60 knife

Tried sharpening ZDP-189 yet? Most difficult steel to sharpen I've found so far, in my limited experience.

I do sharpen my ZDP-189 Dragonfly2. It's the King at hardest to sharpen.

Hardest to sharpen:
1. ZDP-189
2. M390
3. S110V

From the many steels that I've tried, my top 3 favorites are ZDP-189, Elmax and VG-10.

VG-10 is pretty easy to sharpen. And i've found Elmax to be a little easier to sharpen then s30v, but might have to do with the kind of knife, blade shape, company, etc. Zdp-189 is hands down the worst steel to sharpen that I've dealt with too. If there is one harder then that, I don't want it.

I agree 100% about S30V! Every knife I've had with that blade material pisses me off! I can work on it and try the best I can to get it shaving sharp and I can never get it to shave. Sometimes I can get it close but not like I want it. My Elmax on the other hand I can get it to shave with one stroke. Im glad to hear VG10 isn't to difficult to sharpen. Im looking forward to seeing how my SOG works out. This will be my first knife from SOG because I don't know anything about them, don't know anybody that owns them. They retail for $188 on the SOG website so I went to Amazon for almost half the price. Anyway I'll give a review a few days after I've played with it.:jerkit:

One more in agreement, VG10 seems easier / quicker than S30V and gets pretty damn sharp!

i love spydrcos vg10. holds well and I can get it scary sharp. Im not a huge fan of supersteels just because it takes me a lot longer to get as sharp.

I also find VG10 to be pretty easy to sharpen. Depends on other factors but it can also be made super sharp.
