Im thinking about buying one of these for my 4yr old so he can hang it around his neck when we go hiking.. I figure I can throw his whistle on there with it.. Thoughts?

Presumably you'll be teaching him how to use the sharp edge safely, and supervising him while he has it. In that case is the point on a regular SAK blade really a concern?

I'd think a SAK he won't grow out of would be a better a choice; besides I think the 'My First' can be tricky to get hold of/cost more than 'better' SAKs.

Looks like my first pocket knife after my Mom got hold of it! Seriously, I don't think the point should concern you all that much, since you will be right there with him whenever he uses it.

It's a good one. My kids got one, with the blade reshaped into a sheepsfoot after they demonstrated some responsible use.

There is a "plus" version which adds a woodsaw. That thing can bite pretty well. Not sure about this for a young child as it seems more likely to cause a problem than the knife blade... great little saw though.

Just my $.02, but if you don't think your child should be handling a point tipped item, are you sure they should be handling a sharp edged one?
(Just food for thought, please don't take this the wrong way!)

Looks great, intending to do the same thing with my little one. She's just started taking an interest in my knives, so it's a good place for her to start and work upwards.

IMO, it's an extremely rare and exceptional 4-year-old that can safely use a pocketknife. Maybe your's is, I don't know, that's your decision.

This is a better First Victorinox for the average 2-6 year old:

I have the plastic SAK posted above. Both my kids (3 and 4) love it. The tools are all plastic. It's also quite large - which is great for small fingers. I highly recommend this toy.

Do the tools actually work? if so, the bottle opener is kind of funny for a 2-6y/o lol.
No, the tools don't actually work 'cause they're a soft plastic. ;)

I suppose a kid could eat with the spoon though.

I gave my boy one of these when he was about 6 months old. He loved it!

My son also has one. He loves it so much. He's two years old, and it fascinates him. Recommend +1

Actually they are as cheap or cheaper than regular SAKs.
They are razor sharp but lack a penetrating point.
I bought a "My First Plus" about a year and a half ago, around 16$ on ebay, new.
With neck lanyard and chain belt lanyard included.

I bought it to mod but actually used it stock for a while.
Great little knife!

Recently modded it, put very thin wood scales on it and converted the blade to a clip point.

Thank you Bob for your post! Thats exactly the type of thing id be comfortable giving my daughter!

I gave one of these to my daughter a year or so ago (she's now three). She loves it and always takes it "camping" under the dining room table. She calls it her "fixit."

Well I cam across the 'My First Victorinox' at a store yesterday, I picked it up and took it home to my daughter.
Her chest puffed up with pride when I handed it to her, telling her that it was her first of hopefully many, and that she could use it when we go out on walks together, and keep it in my knife draw.

I hope that with constant guidance and supervision, that I'm doing the right thing.
