So, after spending far too much time trying to rebevel my knives on my Spyderco Sharpmaker, I've decided to pick up a whetstone from DMT.

I figure I'll use the whetstone for heavy edge work and then finish up with the Sharpmaker.

Do you guys think an extra course 6 or 8 inch diamond whetstone paired with the SM will get the job done?

I'm open to any suggestions for different stones or anything else. This will be my first attempt to get into freehand sharpening.

Well, after doing some more research around here, I figure I'll keep myself on a cheap budget and pick up a two sided hone at Sears or Home Depot. These will hopefully rebevel a few of my knives quickly and inexpensively.

Get a DMT duo sharp coarse/extra coarse or fine/coarse. You can get the 8" model for around $50.00 on the bay. I think these will work well for you.

I heard a conversation about "curing" a knife blade so it does not rust so easy, especially with carbon blades. Does anyone have any advise I can use.

They were probably talking about a patina, the gray discoloration that happens naturally to a carbon blade over time. If you wipe the blade after use and keep it dry, you will avoid red rust but eventually get a patina.

You can also speed up the process with various substances, like lemon juice, potatoes or mustard. Do a search with keywords like "lemon+patina" or "mustard+patina" and you will find a lot of info.
