Here it is folks. my first WIP ever. There have been a couple really helpful people, mainly Fluidsteel on the forum, who has hooked me up with a lot of stuff I would have been unable to get otherwise, and Stan Buzek, who makes some really nice stuff and sent me some really, really nice "scraps" of really nice wood to play with. I haven't used them yet becuase I don't want to ruin them. finally, Max Burnett, who I don't think is on bladeforums but who has a really, really good HT tutorial over on knife network workshop. . he also put up with e-mails. lots of e-mails.

here goes. This knife is a small paring knife that I desperately need. our family has 2 plain edge kitchen knives that are actually useable. one is a meat cleaver, and the other is a 7 inch santoku paula deen chef knife that was a value village rescue. as you can see, I need this. It will be 1080, and if it turns out i will do a SS version in red and dark blue g10 for the mom and sister. its indoctrination time. ;)

this is the original design. I have a thing for chunky knives, and i just could not bear making it so pointy.

I shaved the tolerances pretty close. I even had to trim it down.

these clamps are freaking amazing. they do everything and are just wonderful. I will be buying some in the future becuase i love them, and becuase I killed some of dad's ;) the platform used to be a barbecue, but it turned into a worktable.

here is the blade profiled and mostly descaled. it seems that the steel I have will pit if reheated with the scale still on. go figure.

here we are, ready to start on the bevels. I will update when I can.

P.S. sorry about the huge pics. they will be smaller next time.

cool wip, it looks like your finding out how giving this craft is.. im in pdx area, feel free to contact me!

I hope to work on it some more tonight, and so I may have some more pics up later. I am looking forward to this.

which would you guys prefer to see: high grind or FFG?

That is looking great! Nice work, it looks like an excellent start.

I vote for the high grind. I think leaving a shoulder looks great and you can always get rid of it. It will make it more difficult but I think the effort will be worth it.

don't look now, but I started the FFG becuase I wanted to try it and becuase I am going for max efficiency. sorry about that ;) as far as specs go, it is 1080 that is 1/8x1x9ish.

I will put up more pics as I get a little farther.

Haha!!! i did not forget, but i got about 2 pictures. so i kind of forgot. sue me.

this is the blade after it was ground. the flat grind is as ugly as a slitheen, and so i'm not going to show that off.

this is the finished project. stall mat is really nice, and works pretty well with 36 grit sandpaper. i half finished it with some 120, and it is pretty nice.

Nice, Geek!!

Been waiting to see something like this from you. Keep us posted, I'm looking forward to seeing this one progress.

Looks great thegeek574! I cannot wait until I get to the point where I can make similar knives.
Your very talented along with everybody else on here.
