It has a 4" long blade, the spine is 3.5" the handle is cord wrapped, but as you see I did it wrong...give me suggestions on how to fix this. I have not put the final finish on it, and please excuse the bad pictures. :D

If you think this is good enough to sell, please post your thoughts here:

Sorry for the double pictures I figured it would be seen more in a separate thread, therefore more help on design.

Thanks guys!

are you trying to say this is your first knife ever? if so i feel pretty pathetic in my knifemaking efforts. its taken me a long time to get where you are now, mine last couple blades have started looking that good only because of some new tools i bought. you must have some really good equiptment to be able to do that your first time!
that said, i was wondering what steel you used? i really love that knife, and would like to make something similar.

For myself, I always take the core out of parachute cord BERORE I wrap... otherwise you have a cushy glue mongering hafting material to deal with not to mention you can't get it tight enough.

cool knife; I like the serrations...

This is your very first knife?

That's a really ambitious effort attempting a dagger grind on the very first blade.

If this is indeed your first blade grind your off to a butt kickin' start because that blade looks great.

Well done, young Jedi!

What they said....and then some. Congrats. I din't try a doulbe edge blade for months after I started. Good job!
PS: I'd still keep it for sentimental value. Make another one and sell that.

Well it's kinda my first.

Its my first in that it is the first completed. It was made from hardened steel from a planer blade. My bets and hopes are D2, but I dunno.

I have a few other knives in progress, they are very similar to the usmc fighting knife. (Single edge, clip point, 6" blade) they are made from ATS 34 steel which is waiting to be heat treated.

As to tools, I have a 2 x 48 craftsmen belt grinder, a bench grinder, no drill press, dremel tool, cut off wheels for my manual drill, a few files...Nothing really fancy. I started out with a 3x18 (Like you elven, if I remember correctly)

My first knife I ever touched to the grinder was a boot knife with a 1" by 6" blade. I never finished that one, but I was able to get the grind looking nice just using my bench grinder and my 3x18. If you work hard elven, you can easily do this kind of work. I don't believe I am gifted, I have just learned several things from people. books and forums.

Way to go Brian! Nothing like jumping in with both feet. ;) Like Ed said, I'd keep that one for sentimental value if nothing else. I rue the day my own first knife was stolen, and I actually tried to replicate it once. It was not the same.

As to wrapping your handle - as well as pulling out the core (thanks Mitch!), try packing the wrap tighter - really shove it together. I've never tried one like yours but I like it everywhere I see it. You did a great job on that sheath too. It's going to be fun watching you make more knives, looks to me like there's nothing you won't be able to pull off.

Keep this one. Make more to sell. You'll be wishing you had this is years to come. Very good job!

I was wondering about the handle. Did I fasten the cord correctly?? Am I really supposed to cut a slot in the tang for the cord, or did I mess up?? i was wondering because I saw something like I diamond wrap? if I remember correctly.

Just wanted yall's opinion. :D

Great job on the dagger. They are very diffucult to do but very cool, plus you get twice the practice grinding.
I also think you should keep this one. I don’t have the first knife that I made…......but I know who does. :D

Looks real good for your first. ;) From the looks of that you won't have any problem selling the next one. I'm with the others, I'd keep my first made knife.

So is the consensus that I did it right??? I'm wondering about how the cord is finished..take a look at the back of the handle again, and tell me what you think...

Thanks for all the kind comments, I'm workin hard here to finish up some more. Just sent some off for heat treat yesterday.

Can someone give me instructions for tempering this blade in a standard cooking oven?? I'm guessing at D2, as I said earlier.
