Hey guys
Im the newbie ! This is a pic of my first blank and the saw blade I cut it from. I got the blade from my pap pa. The saw blade is good steel (ole pap said carbon tip my but, I know differince between steel an crap) Now Im fixing to attack it with a file. I do have power tools but with my lack of experienc I think using a file is the best way ! Your opionins good or bad is appreciated ... Thanks

Listen to Pap. It may be good steel, it may not. Probably is because it doesn't have carbide tips on the teeth. But, then it will be a learning experience. The cutout looks good, take your time and enjoy

No easy way to tell what steel it is, but the profile looks good.............Speaking of profiles, how about filling out yours.

Profile looks good. Looks like you've spent a lot of time cutting out the profile, plunge lines, etc., already.

Try heat treating a scrap. It should give you an idea whether it is high carbon or not. After quenching, a file shouldn't cut it and it should snap if you try to bend it.

Wow, what a lot of file work! Really nice going for #1.

It looks like you're on your way! The only problem I have is with your design. It looks like a knife. Your first knife is supposed to look like a gargoyle.;-)

good luck, keep us informed with more pictures, and please, fill out your personal profile.

Awesome profile on that! Any thoughts on handle material yet?

Hope it turns out well, keep us updated!

Cedar doesn't usually work as a handle material. Try something a bit harder if available.

OK, I've been thinking this for a couple days. I asked someone else to take a look and they agreed. Either you're pulling our leg and trying to pass off a waterjet cut or store bought blank as your own, or you did one hell of a job on the profile. We finally agreed that the plunge line in the first picture is marker, so we've decided you did a hell of a job profiling your first knife.

Great job!

Lol ! Thanks !
Im a newbi to making knives but I have twenty + years experiences with a bench grinder & most other power tools ! Cutting out the blank was the easy part . I do wish the part about the waterjet was true though ! Man would i love to have a waterjet ! I would have commented on your first post but did not know what a plunge line was !
