It’s been a long expensive journey, but I think I’m finally ready to cull the herd.
I’ve tried most brands with most of the locking systems. I was not terribly disappointed with any of them. The hyped ones were about what I expected, (not that great), and some of the lesser known turned out to be pretty good.

You can buy a great knife for 150-200 bucks. You don’t have to spend a ton of money. Buy what you want and don’t look back.

Most of these are leaving, I’m either selling them or giving them away. I’ve found what I like best. All of them are very good knives, however, most of the expensive ones didn’t make the cut.

Hey bearcut,

I had the same realization not too long ago when I traded/sold off my $300+ folders. There's a ton of great knives for $200 or less out there that give you the same performance and satisfaction.

Now, I still love the Sebenza, and will happily get one when money is better (and my wedding over :o), but as far as function for your dollar, you can't beat some of the "lower end" stuff out there.

Kershaw has the blur/bump/tyrade, spyderco has the endura/delica/military/para-military, ZT line has everything you'll ever need, the list goes on and on.

Judging by those knives, you won't have a hard time culling the herd :D

Take care, J.

I too have considered thinning the herd, but have never gotten far enough to pull the trigger.

I could get several hundred bucks, or a few thousand maybe, but a couple of years from now I would never know where the cash went and I would no longer have the knives.

Might segregate the non-users, which constitute 90% of my arsenal, and just see what its like not to have them.

My 79y old dad seems to get by just fine with an old, rusty Schrade slipjoint that I gave him.

impressive collection. I own only 4 folders right now.
I'm jealous. :D
I've kind of been wanting to try out a ZT, they appear to be quite solid.
Take care,
-steve

I made the same decision a while back. I gave away most te knives I didnt use. I still have a couple which I will sell when I need the money but I only have maybe 4 folders I dont use. I have 3 folders I use a lot and about 3 fixed blades.

I am pretty happy with my collection but always look for new stuff to knock out the old:)

See I went the other way. I had 30+ BM folders and sold them off to buy more expensive knives. I like having only 5 knives to carry. 3 out of the 5 are over $375.

bearcut your opening post is leaving out the most important point for me, the explanation. why did some of those classics not make the cut? and why did those that did make the cut get chosen?

I look at the collection I've amassed, which pales in comparison to most folks', and I have to wonder what I was thinking when I started 'collecting'.

I was happy with a Buck 110 and an SAK or two - a Boker Tree Brand slippie would have been nice - my Buck 301 was effective. My Dad's old WWII KaBar was all I needed in the boonies. That Western hunting knife - bought with 'Green Stamps' when LBJ was Prez - and lost in a move - was neat. My gosh I am blessed - 110s out the kazoo - other Bucks, too - Marbles - BRK&T - even an RC-5. Benchmades - Kershaws - Spyderco. I need to cull the herd... but I'll keep the 'Sharpmaker'. Time to make the 'list' here, too.

Naw, I'm going to the local pusher in the AM and decide which Benchmade I don't need - but 'must have'!

Stainz

PS I found a new Western 66 fb in a junk box at a local sporting goods store... replaced my 'Green Stamp' knife!
