We have been nursing our 15 year old boxer, Shelby for about a year. She had cancer that was operated on a year ago. She slowly regained some of her strength, but the cancer stayed with her. Couldn't see putting her under anymore stress from additional surgeries.

We decided that she had gone through enough and today would be her last. She had not eaten for 2 days and wasn't standing at all. When I came home from work we were going to take her to the Vet to be put down.

We got in the wife's car, with me holding Shelby. It wasn't 5 minutes after we left the house that Shelby breathed her last. She went peacefully in my arms as the wife drove. No struggle, no apparent pain, just stopped breathing and passed. I guess that none of us could ask for more than that when we go.

She is and will continue to be missed. She and her "sisters' Annie the whippet and Tsasha the Husky have been such a big part of our lives.

Just had to share this with my friends.

Thanks for letting me get this out.

Sorry to hear of Shelby's passing... my condolences. I'm sure she enjoyed all the years she got to spend with you and the family.

Chuck, you have my condolences, I can relate.

I lost my Dal of 13 years a while back, I'd nursed her thru her last few months, knew it was inevitable, and didn't want her to suffer anymore. I wasn't going to take her to the vet on her last day, so I'd made arraignments for our vet to make a house call.

She saved us all of that, she passed, on her bed, under my feet, with the other critters beside her.

More than I could have ever asked for.

I still miss her, and now I have tears running down my face.

Chuck I am truly sorry to hear about the passing of your dear friend Shelby.
Well wishes and positive thoughts sent to you and your family:thumbup:

I'm sorry, Chuck. I've been thru this and it's the price we pay for being able to have such a noble companion for a time. The reward is much greater than the price, but it is still a hard thing when they go.

Lord Byron's gravestone epitaph for his faithful companion:

Near this spot

Are deposited the Remains of one

Who possessed Beauty without Vanity,

Strength without Insolence,

Courage without Ferocity,

And all the Virtues of Man without his Vices. This Praise, which would be unmeaning Flattery

If inscribed over human ashes,

Is but a just tribute to the Memory of

BOATSWAIN, a Dog,

Who was born at Newfoundland, May, 1803,

And died at Newstead Abbey, Nov. 18, 1808.

Chuck, sorry for your and Barb's loss of a dear friend.

You'll be in my thoghts man...

I know the love, I know the loss... It's hard to take at once and yet still worth the love you gave to your faithful companion, and that your companion returned threefold to you. Bud, I'm sorry that yours had to go...

I'm am saddened by your loss. My deepest sympathy.

Im so sorry. i had to put down my rottweiler several years ago, she was only 7 but had gotten cancer as well. it destroyed her within a month.

hardest thing i have ever done. i think about her daily.

all my best,
mark

I am sorry to hear about the loss of a member of your family. I hope that in future times, you can remember all the happiness you and Shelby had together. I am sure she was a wonderful dog. We have a Black Lab\Boxer mix. I have never met a more loving dog.

I know Shelby's sisters mean a great deal to you as well. Give them an extra hug and hold them.

I am sorry for your loss, I had to have our horse of 26yrs put down this year, toughest decision I ever had to make. We could have tried a few things, but she had a good life and I knew she would not have been happy living if she couldn't run around free. When you are young and someone or a pet dies, it seems you don't think too much of it (or at least I didn't think too deep about it). But as you get older, you realize everything must pass on at sometime and it get to you more.

Take care,

Tim

Chuck, I wish you and yours the very best and I empathize. As an avid fan of the un-sheeple, I've seen many go to greener pastures. May Shelby enjoy the company and new adventures.

Sorry to hear about Shelby! It's truely sad when the day comes... I can relate as my pup of 8 years had cancer as well. I couldn't watch her be in pain anymore, and had to have her put down. One of the hardest things I had to do.

My thoughts are with you Chuck.

I am so sorry about your loss. I was at the vet with one of my dogs yesterday (follow up on a broken bone) and saw this framed on the wall.

Pets are a tough thing. They are such pals but we know we'll suffer through losing them.

Just remember how lucky you were to have her in your life for a while.
