well my friend isn't really a knife guy...but he bout a cheapo survival knife from harbor freight tools...and he liked the idea of it but now he wants a serious blade.....its a large ka bar style fixed blade with a saw on the spine....he really wants something very similar but well made by a reputable knife maker. i would like some recommendations of a large full tang fixed blade with either a saw or serrations on the spine of the blade with 1095 or better preferably around the 100$ mark....its prolly gunna be his Christmas present....even though he has lost 2 of my blades(one i loved very much -.-)

Don't like em myself, but you might want to check out:

Oops! Sorry, just re-read your post. This hark-back to the 1980's, has a hollow-handle. Check out TOPS knives, there's some saw-backs there.

Yeah, my first response is forget the sawback.

I'm sure he feels its a necessary tool, but in all honestly, its a waste. There are dozens of good blades that meet the criteria, as long as you forego the sawback.

There are tons of quality knives that meet those criteria, with the exception of the sawback feature. Just forget it, get a becker/esee/swamp rat/scrapyard/etc/etc

all a sawback does is make it dangerous to choke up on a blade and use your index finger on the spine for better control when attempting to do some small work with a big knife.

What does your friend intend to use the knife for? Is he an outdoorsman? Is he going to use the knife for camping?

Or does he just want a "cool" looking knife?

The fact that he has already lost TWO knives (YOUR knives, not his, which is even WORSE) implies that he is a very irresponsible person. I personally wouldn't spend $100 of my hard earned money buying someone a knife if it's just going to be something "cool" for them to own, and probably get lost anyway.

lol he just wants a cool looking knife....i doubt he will ever use the blade for its intended purpose...now that i think about it the full tang thing isnt necessary....he will never use it hard enough to require a full tang...he actually thinks the hallow handle thing is awesome and likes that he can put stuff in it....he just wants something similar looking to a cheapo knife from a tool store and he thought the saw back was the coolest thing ever....lol and no he isnt very responsible....he loses everything.....he lost my crkt m21-14sfg and my kershaw tone and he messed up my spyderco tenacious....lol ive know lowered my limit to like 60 bucks

Then go mid range, if you buy something cheap, and he gets the idea to do something um, creative, we don't want him hurting himself.

There's only one hollow handled knife that I know of, well, make that two, Schrade makes one, and Chris Reeve makes one.

Neither fall under the realm of inexpensive. Especially Chris's blade.

i've had a air force fighting knife 86-1 form ontario since well about 89' there is a sawback design on the blade. I have never used that feature....but to each there own, besides maybe that will be knife to get him into knives. But you can find the 86-1 for under 100$

Go to the $ store and get him one of those plastic kids 'Rambo' knives. Maybe there'll come a day when he can play with the grown-ups! :)

Moose, have you seen the survival knife that claudio-cas has up in the custom knife forum? Also not inexpensive, but yeah. That one is worth a look-see.

I'd just get him a Ka-bar and be done with it. Or save your money and buy yourself a new Tenacious.
