My model 83 Tascosa has developed some vertical play when the blade is locked open.

Should this concern me and is it normal? I has been rock solid tight when open up until now.

I have to admit that the vertical play does irritate me a great deal but I am more concerned about the lock failing.

I really don't think you need worry about lock-failure, blade play is not a forerunner of this. Can't imagine with a small knife like this you would be battening or stressing the lock much anyway.

I don't know why some knife develop vertical play. Perhaps having brass as a liner material plays a role? Being soft it might start to wear? A Moki small lock back i have has no play anywhere and has a superb mating between tang and backspring making it almost like a fixed blade when locked open. But, they are really superb makers and they use only stainless for liners and springs.

I'm very keen on my 83 lock backs, a superb compact knife with a decent sized Dropoint . It may have some 'play' if I grab the tip and pull hard but very slightly. I used mine all week-end in the garden including up a ladder trimming shoots on a tree and vines, find it very useful for the situations where a lock can be desirable. I really don't think you need to be concerned or disappointed, onwards and enjoy!

I've been using my 83 for six months and noticed the same thing.
It was rock solid new and now has some vertical play. Truthfully, I'm not even concerned about it.
GEC makes them right and that should be peace of mind for anyone who uses them.

I have 2 83's. Brand new out the tube , both have vertical play. To me it's annoying. My 2 Case Copperlocks are rock solid for half the price. I like the current run on the 72's but right now I'm hesitant to pull the trigger.

Thank you everyone for your comments. I do like the model 83 a lot and this play annoys me but I am glad the knife is still safe and usable.
