My girlfriend and I went backpacking since the weather was finally warm enough for her. She tries to practice different survival skills on each trip. She can build a fire with a ferro rod and striker but sometimes has some trouble. I bought her one of these to try: http://www.coleman.com/coleman/colemancom/detail.asp?product_id=829C705&categoryid=27401&brand=
A PJ ball and one strike got her fire started. It may not look as nice as other fire starters but it works. It would be great for any newbie!

How does it work??

Speculation's not always a bad thing, right?

It looks to me like you would hold it by the nuts in the middle and twist the knurled knob on the left side. The round steel (gray checkered wheel like on most lighters) can be seen on the rightmost end, and the little brass tube under the steel likely houses the flint and the spring that presses the flint against the steel.

Either that or I need to watch WAY more MacGyver. :foot: :D

I used one of those in a potato cannon quite a few years back. It worked well to ignite the hairspray and launch the tater.

Doc Canada did a really cool mod on one of those. I think his was one handed operation but I may be remembering incorrectly.

Ditto...

Starter Fluid (aerosol...basically just ether in a spray form) is alot better than the hairspray...just FYI...

I always use propane in a sealed chamber with a stun gun ignitor. Waaaaay more potato chucking power.
