My grandfather’s knife

I had to go to a funeral service today and in the eulogy the son talked about his dad passing down a pocket knife to the grandson.

Later on in the day my mom recalls the story as we are sitting on her couch and then tells me that my dad has a pocket knife that I can pass down to my son. My ears perk up and I’m intrigued as I never knew my dad to own a pocket knife, much less carry one. She then says that she thinks it may have been my paternal grandfather’s that was passed down to my dad. I look over at my dad as I’ve never heard of this knife before and he just shrugs. I told my mom that I’d love to look at it (thinking I’d rather have it for now and then later would pass it on to my son when he gets older). She gets up to go get it out of my dad’s dresser. At this point I’m pretty excited, because we aren’t the type of family that has a lot of keepsakes or sentimental things that are passed down. I’m guessing it is likely an old traditional slip joint that my grandfather carried and can’t wait to handle something he had and see the vintage pocket wear on it .

My mom comes back a few minutes later and hands it to me. I take one look at it and laugh as she gives me some cheesy 90’s looking pocket knife that has some kind of bright orange reflective glitter-esque scales and a key ring. I give her a look of laughter and disappointment as I tell her this is not a vintage knife that my grandfather would have had and is likely just some silly pocket knife that my brother probably found in a parking lot when we were kids that was shoved into my dad’s dresser because we weren’t old enough to have it ourselves.

Not surprising, I open the knife and there is a big glaring CHINA stamped on the blade and notice that the blade had a horrible sharpening job done to it 30 years ago by the previous owner.

My mom looks closer at it and agrees. My dad looks over, nods and says yeah I don’t know where that thing came from.

So close to getting a family knife, but yet so far away….

You managed to tell a great and funny story out receiving that knife! Good memories, even if it wasn't as hoped.

Buy and carry something nice. You'll be the grandfather some day.
