My grandfather's WWII mess kit "knife" help identify please?

This is almost certainly my grandfather's. I don't think it was my Dad's from Vietnam. I'm assuming it was part of a mess kit? Do any of you have more info about it? It was not acquired later. I remember having it my entire life. I'm 44.

It shows signs that he sharpened it a little. There are some small nicks and dents in it too. It's the ONLY thing I have from my grandfather William. My father is deceased so I cannot ask him about it.

This is funny...I had it in our kitchen gadget drawers I'm attempting to downsize. I do a lot of cooking/baking so everything left on this table is frequently used sadly enough...maybe I can loose a corkscrew or 2.
