We been sorting out some of my grandparents stuff here lately. I ended up with my grandpa's knives a guns. Most of his knives are dime store cheapos. Found this and dad said he bought a pair and gave my grandpa one in the late 70s early 80s. All the knives were in poor shape but this one stood out due to being SS and not all rusty.
The factory sheath is prolly long gone. He used it to skin pigs and cows so he just carried it in his pocket when the time come. He wasn't known to be careful with a whetstone so the blade was pretty scratched. Well I found this newer sheath from who knows what schrade model, it was well worn and dried all out so I cleaned and oiled it. I then just took a light polish on an old towel and ran it over the knife. Wasn't worried about removing the scratches put in it just clean it up a bit. I wish I woulda took some before pictures but here's the after. The bolsters had fine scratches all over to the point of looking stonewashed and most all the brass was green. Way past the patina craze that seems to be so popular but I'm sure some of you guys will still be harelipped. Just not my cup of tea.

I kinda like this blade shape. It's pretty easy to pinch the blade and open it one handed with the flip of a wrist. Aint gonna take the place of my auto but I think it's gonna make a good knife to use while I'm grilling or smoking.

Done a quick google search on the model and read the most popular results. Anybody know of anything less well known about it?

51OT was called the "Big Timer". Stainless? I though all Old Timers were carbon and all Uncle Henry's were stainless.

Nice to have your grandpa's knife.
Harelipped?

Old country saying, explains it about as well as I can:

Also went by bulldog and sunfish, big timer is far more popular. I might be wrong but I'm 99% sure this aint a carbon blade or it woulda been rusted in place. The only maintenance my grandpa done with his knives was to wash them with a water hose and dry it on his pants leg before he put it back in his pocket. He had one course stone he sharpened with. If it got oiled it was because he spilled oil on his pants.

Some of the Old Timers had "Schrade +"/"Schrade Plus" blades. I know my old Schrade/Old Timer USA 6OT and 7OT both have the stainless blades. :( (I'd rather have the carbon steel blades.)

Aint a plus but is an first run best I can tell because it has the nickel bolsters and USA stamp.

This is the inside, all I done was clean it with a dry q-tip. Most every carbon steel old timer I've ever seen this clean was the day it was taken out of it's package.

From my limited searches once taylor took over and done a 2nd run the nickel bolsters were replaced with brass, the USA stamp was removed, The bolsters had a more squared edge, and a SS blade was included.

One thing I learned about Schrade is they were consistently inconsistent.

Aint that the truth. I once found an OT on a roof of a bank I had to soak 3 days to get the blades to open and close. The main blade and sheeps foot were carbon steel. For some odd reason the pen knife blade was SS and looked brand new. Need to see if my son still has it so I can take pics of it. But it was a taylor knife made in china.

Its a beuatiful reminder of Grandad...use only on the finest fillet steaks.
