Hi, someone over on garagejournal.com told me to stop by here and see if anyone can tell me something about the knife I just received as a Christmas gift from my mom in memory of my Grandparents. Grandma passed away this year (grandpa years ago) and mom found this little pocket knife in Grandmas jewlery box.

It's a Robert Klaas. I figured that much out. Also has "Germany" stamped on it as well as "Solingen" and the "Kissing Cranes" logo. It's pretty simple. The blades are still tight and sharp.

Can anyone give me an idea on it's age?

I'm so in love with this little knife. I don't think I can carry it for fear I would lose it. I'm thinking it will have a nice spot with my other collectables in my garage.

Here's a couple pics:

It looks to be from the 60's or 70's
Nice old knife. I would suggest keeping it lightly oiled to prevent any corrosion/rust. 3 in 1 oil should work fine.
If you fear losing it, maybe find a "replacement" on eBay and carry that one. Or if you prefer a new knife, companies like Case and Great Eastern Cutlery make great USA knives.

I'd go 60s? Nice. Good quality, but nothing crazy - invaluable because it is a family knife. Looks like he used it well. Maybe you should? I know, it's a tough Q, but I carry my Gpa's knives on special occasions.

Enjoy it whatever you do.

(edit) - That is a pretty little knife. I'm glad you're stoked on it.

I think I'm stoked just cause it was his. It is definately well used.

I usually have a cheap ($50 - $80) Kershaw or SOG tanto as my EDC. This little guy is cool but I think I'll keep it in the shape its in. Knives on my hip or in my pocket tend to get abused.

Just a sweet little memory of my family.

I bet Grandpa would want you to carry it.I have given my grandson a few of my knives ,told him use them if you wish please dont lose them

It's a nice knife, obviously for family reasons, but also in its own right. Looks like a Sleeveboard pattern, single-spring, that has clearly been well used and sharpened down. (that's evidence of it being favoured and well liked by your grandfather!) Looking at it, I suspect it could actually be from the 50s. Frankly, I wouldn't carry it as a user, far too much likelihood of it getting lost which would be a real blow. Polish the handles with some wax or lemon oil and carry on special occasions. However, you could buy a similar new Traditional as a kind of homage to your grandfather. I'd suggest a CASE yellow delrin Pen Knife: carbon steel or stainless versions, both work well, single spring 2 blades that will slip into the pocket nicely. These are inexpensive and so if you lose it you can get another with no grief, but they're handy for light tasks and appealing.

If you want to spend more and get atop of the range knife, check Great Eastern Cutlery's No.33 Conductor pattern. These are really excellent small yet workable knives, you can find one in ebony to be like your Grandfather's carry. Thanks for showing us this.

Regards, Will
