I gave my 7 year old Grandson his first knife awhile ago. It is a small SAK. He is really proud. He has been going around the yard defoliating everything in reach.
Before anyone ask yes he has been given all the safety lectures over and over. He knows if he messes up it will be taken away and it will be a long time before he gets another.
Here is his pic-

A Sebenza?!!!! If my wallet was that big it would be Papaw carrying that one. I have a Buck 110 put back for him. He knows if he does well he will get the shiny brass Buck knife someday.

redhawk44p,

I salute you my friend.. Your young Grandson looks very happy and proud of his new tool. Very Good choice on a first knife!

My uncle was the source of my first pocketknife at the ripe old age of 6 years old.. It taught me responsibility and made me feel like I was on my way towards manhood.. He taught me to whittle and to fish and eventually to hike, camp & hunt.

I gave both my son and daughter pocketknives (case peanuts) on there 6th year and 7th year Birthday several years back now. They are 11 1/2 months apart so we celebrate both of there Birthdays on the same day.. Anyway, both of them benefited enormously from the experience and I am happy to report they are now very avid .22 calibre target shooters and accomplished young fishermen and fisherwomen.

Many Blessings 2 U & Yours ~ ><> ~

That IS most excellent!! My very first knife was a Buck , that I was given at 7 or 8 years of age.Unfortunately, my Buck fell into the Bay at Fire Island, when I was fishing. Your Grandson is so cute!! he looks sooooo happy with his first SAK.

Thank you Sunny and TKC. It is great to be able to share this time with fellow blade people.
TKC, I told him you said he was cute. He turned a nice shade of red.:D

That's great!

I just gave my son his first ral knife for his 9th bday, a Victorinox Hiker. He really wanted a saw, of all things!

Might I recommend a dogtag chain rather than solid lace for around the neck?

Joe

I still remember my first knife. It was an immitation SAK when I was a scout at age 9. My second knife was a real Victorinox SAK when I was about 11. Good memories!

That Buck 110 sounds like a great idea. :) My first knife (about 9) was a SAK and I had some initial issues with a lack of a lock.

A fine gift Redhawk. You are all right.

My Grandpa gave me my first knife, a jigged black scaled scout slipjoint, with lanyard shackle and four tools. He kept on with the masculine gifts, an ice pick, a ballpeen hammer, monkey wrenches and such.

I was able to hide the pocketknife but, unfortunately, mom found out about the ice pick somehow. Da da da da daaaa. Never did hurt myself or anyone else.

His favor to me somehow burnt deep into my memory. Still have the folder. Keep it in a place of honor, mad sharp.

Best,

oregon

I thought of that. I showed him knives with locks and told him his could close if he hit the back of the blade.

Good idea. I will do that.

His Mom took his knife when he got home. He will only get access as a reward for good behavior. I think that is a form of blackmail.;) :D

.. To whom?. :grumpy:

"AWWW MOMMM,, I'll be good, I promise!"..;)

Is his mother your Daughter?.. Or your Daughter-in-law?.. Just curious?

She is my daughter Sunny. She is pretty tough and strict for a 5 footer. If he bucks her it is at his peril.
If he passes the test of time using this knife I will probably get him a bigger SAK. He will not get the Buck 110 or a Spydie till he is in his teens.

Just a freak :o

But not a dangerous one. A college Freak.

You don't have to worry.

Cool, treat them like they have a brain and they will prove you right. I got my first knife at 5-6 IIRC a single blade slip joint, I lost it about a year later and many a tear was shed over it :)

Great looking boy too by the way!

I was about to recommend the same thing. Maybe add a quick disconnect too.

It is so great to be able to amplify the pleasure of giving my Grandson his first knife by sharing it here. This forum is a great place with great people.

Thanks Cybrok. I don't speak the modern english. I gather "Freak" is a good thing now. You seem like an intelligent well mannered young man. I grew up in the 60's and I was not very hip then.

Hey Gramps, er,, uh, I mean redhawk44p:D ,

I aggree with you completely in regard to this statement! We all as members benefit so much from eachother!.. ie, your thread here about your grandsons first knife has made a great many of us grin from ear-to-ear with the joy that we felt when we remember our first knife and whom(special folk) may have brought us that feeling!

We should never underestimate the importance of "mentors" in our young peoples lives!

Yes, this is a great place to be..
