Here's a pic.

It's big. It's green. It chops off heads. What more could you possibly want?

Handles were hand sanded to reprofile them to normal human sized proportions (Hanuman needed to go on a diet), stained three times with water based stain, then sealed with about 8 coats of clear matte polyurethane.

and a shot of Hanuman and the rest of the my babies...

Ahh. NOW it looks green. Nice assortment.

What's the one on the far right? (apologies if you've explained it before).

Nice.............

Thanks Uncle, Aardvark, and Donutsrule!

Aardvark: The one on the far right is a "WWIII". Its a chiruwa WWII thats been blued and has black canvas micarta handle slabs. It was way overpriced (try $250) for what it is, had rust all over the exposed parts of the tang when it arrived because some asshat got his greasy fingers on it and forgot to wipe it down and oil it, and the edge was improperly heat treated.

I didn't know much about khukuris when I got it (NOT from Uncle Bill, HI stuff is done RIGHT!), and it was the second REAL khuk that I bought (the small Hanuman in that picture was my first), so I thought I had something special. Turned out to be more hype than anything. The WWIII isn't a terrible knife, but for that kind of money, it had better be done right.

It has bad edge damage now, and I'm gonna have to reprofile it, have it heat treated again, reblue, and then make up some new micarta slabs for it.

Funny, the UBE in the pic totally outcuts the WWIII, weighs about the same, and was over $125 less expensive!

I'll never buy another khukuri that isn't made by HI...

Sorry that WWIII is such a dog. Looks good in the picture.

Completely understand about the UBE. Love mine.

Heber has been suffering UBE anxiety and I'd like to take a moment to say again how nice the UBE is.

As for green handles; love it.

However, I didn't want to take any off my Hanuman.

Nice! Don't see how you got all along the head there though, without sanding away all of the little features that make it unique. Mine is big and fat but fits my hands well. I would be interested in getting a neat color like that though, if I could do it just by lightly sanding the wood and not taking too much off.

Regards,

Norm

Thanks Munk! :) I think my "keeping only the users" problem is going away. All those posts over the weekend helps. :D

manghu67 nice collection and good job on the handle. Looks really good. You sure have anice collection. Your UBE's handle looks a lot like mine, same wood and ring pattern. Very nice!!

Manghu67 - your collection there is gorgeous. I keep telling myself that cord-wrapped handles (to fit my paws), user patinas, and scratches and dings are pretty to me, but then I see some nice-looking khuks and I realize that I'm deluding myself. All those contrasting handles look great together.

As for price? $250 is not unreasonable for a big blade that works fairly decently. Look at some of the stuff large (and small, for that matter) manufacturers of other styles of blades sell sometimes and the prices they go for. (And how much smaller they are...) The problem is not that $250 is too much. The problem is that UB has spoiled us and we expect a lot more for $250 than we may have otherwise. :)

Again, great collection. The green on the Hanuman is unusual but very cool. It works. It looks even better next to all those others.

Thanks!

I started out with a coarse grit of sand paper and worked my way up from there. I Just took it slow. I didn't really remove much wood from his head, just enough to get the old stain off. When I had finished with the sanding, the rings in the handle were pretty much nonexixtant, so I just recut them with a jewelers file.

Once the sanding was done, I moved on with the stain and then the poly allowing for drying time between coats.

The stain the Kamis used on my knife didn't seem to penetrate too deeply, so if I had just been changing the color, the grips would have styed pretty much the same size.

I love the green handle. What kind of wood is that?

Thanks!

I'm not entirely certain what kind of wood it is, but it appears to be some of that Nepali oak.

Thanks for the compliment!

It's taken me four years to amass my meager collection.

I know some people here have hundreds of khuks!

Thanks, man!

I don't find $250 to be an unreasonable amount to pay for any knife, but the key is that it needs to be done right.

You're damn right that Uncle Bill has spoiled us! His product has never disappointed me.
