Please forgive me for being a newbie on this forum. I thought you might like to see my gunstock club which I made recently after watching one in action in Last of the Mohicans :D . Here are some pics:

And here is me throwing it:

Does anyone know how to use these things properly in battle? If I ever had to melee with it I'd be dead in no time because I have no idea what to do with it, apart from just swinging the thing like a madman :(

Thanks :). It certainly was fun to make. It's light enough to use one-handed (less than 2lbs, most of the weight at the end) so perhaps I could get myself a small axe as well for maximum melee effect. It swings very nicely double-handed too though.

I'm not sure what it was. It was the only hardwood my local timber merchants had and I didn't recognise the name - it was in planks about 10 inches wide by one inch thick with one edge rounded, it's the stuff they use for windowsills apparently. It was light, like pine but with a pinkish tinge, and I used dark oak dye and danish oil to finish it.

I'm a student so I can't afford to do things properly I'm afraid. The blade was a cheapo "made in pakistan" throwing knife from ebay, sob :( :( :(

In the last release of "The Last of the Mohicans" near the end of the movie; the last Mohican tears up the bad indian with one of those.

Maybe you can rent the movie and play the fight scene in slow motion to see how he uses it.

It really was pretty good.

Yup...That's about it; Just swing it in a figure-8 pattern 'till body parts start falling off and blood is squirting out of your adversary by the quarts.:D.

Chully, thanks for the reply. I always wanted to make one of those, seeing yours has inspired me to do it thanks.

I was at the timber merchants again today and I had a look at the hardwood, the label was something like "Par Meranti Seraya". I don't know the first thing about hardwood :D but it seems to be holding up quite well.

"par meranti seraya" seems to me like a bunch of malay words strung together. "meranti" and "seraya" are two different medium to heavy density hardwoods which can be found in South East Asia. Good stuff. Used a lot in flooring and outdoor furniture, IIRC.
