Axes, and tomahawks are nice combination weapons/tools especially in wilderness survival where there seems no end to things needing chopped. On the other hand, I find a claw hammer more appropriate for urban survival. Here, things are more likely to require smashing, or prying than chopping, and a hammer is just a better design for both.
My favorite is a "DeathStick" 24 oz framing hammer with the "dogleg" hatchet handle. It's big, and heavy, and can smash, or pry it's way through anything eventually. There's a nail set as well for when you occasionally have to sink one of them.
I've gotten pretty good at hurling it as well. The head will leave a vizible dent in OSB from 15' away, and the claw will stick in regular grained wood with practice. I feel confident in swinging it at anyone wearing any armor including tilting plate! If they're wearing ballistic vest, I'll just aim for the head.
If you feel the need to respond, be advized that I probably won't read it. I'm leaving for a 13 week trvelling job which should effectively keep me off the internet. Rest assured I'm being well compensated for my sacrifice.
