Hey guys, I'm new to this forum, but I love hawks and pretty much anything else to do with the frontier. I just wanted to see what you guys thought of my hawk that a buddy of mine and I made.

The head was forged out of an old boxcar spring (not sure exactly what metal it is) and the haft is made from a sappling of white oak that I chopped down, let age for a few months and then fire hardened before adding to the hawk. The wrap under the head is rawhide that has been burned for the color and there is a replaceable leather wrap on the topknot. The tacks are brass furniture tacks I had laying around and there is also some brass wire that I got from some of my old guitar strings. I also did all of the carvings. There is also a wolf's head scrimshawed beteen the carved bands that didn't come out in the pics. Thanks in advance for any comments guys.

That's why I put the leather on the topknot. :) I was beating it up. People told me that white oak is too soft to use but I have put that thing through all kinds of crap and it looks just as good as the day I made it.

Cool, I like it. It has a traditional look to it. This is very much the type of hawk style and decoration that I like.

Thanks guys. I tried to keep it as traditional as possible, while trying to add a little of my own personality. That thing'll even split some pretty big sticks of hardwood for the fire. :)

Thanks Mike. I'm about to tackle making my first hawk head pretty soon. It's gonna be a hammer poll out of 5160 and maybe an ash or hickory handle for it. We'll see. I'll post pics of it too.

Too, cool, Bradley. How long did you make the handle, and how did you make that decision?

If he dont quit trying to chop down the woods behind our houses I am going to take that thing back away from him....:D :D :D

I think he sleeps with that darned thing:D

I cant wait till he gets out in the smithy with me and forges his first hawk head...

I also didnt think the handle material was going to hold up,but he proved me wrong...

Thanks guys for all the nice comments. Twindog, the handle is about 22 inches or so, I used one of Bruce's premade handles to measure but I lost a little in grinding. Bruce, I'll forge another one pretty soon, if you guys like this hawk, you should look at his, I'll put his site at the bottom of the post, go to albums nine and ten in the archived photo albums, they are saweet!
