my home made KMG belt grinder

I just got my belt grinder done and wired up. I made all the parts but the rollers on my milling machine. My dad made the rollers for me on his lathe since I dont have one yet. This baby has a 3 h.p. 1720 rpm motor. Its being run on a vfd "variable speed frequency drive" so I can adjust speeds without having to change belts. With the vfd you can also drive the grinding belt direct, no pillow block bearings or pulleys like the kmg.
The drive pulley is made out of aluminum and I believe my dad said he put a 1 degree taper on it from the center. the tensioner pulley is also aluminum with a 1 degree taper. the taper puts a high spot in the center of the pulley which aids in the tracking of the belt just like the old flat belt pulleys on tractors for running sawmills and stuff.
The two pulleys for the platen double as small rubber coated contact wheels. The top one is made out of a 2.5" roller from a bottle labeling machine. The bottom pulley is 1.5" and it also came from a labeler.
I used old vehicle water pump bearings for the pulleys. Water pump bearings are ideal to use because they come with a sealed shaft already installed.

I have to give my dad all the credit on this project since he made the rollers, did all the wireing and I copyed his ideas. It doesnt look like it would be that hard to make but I put a hell of a lot of work into this.

I need to try a different web site to post pics on.
are the pictures showing now?

You know A guy has to have something good in him when you copy his machine, post a picture and he compliments you on it!!

Hee hee...that's a very generous compliment...however, it is not MY machine to copy. It was basically designed online...right here on BF about 4 years ago. I'm not smart enough to come up with it....I just did what you guys told me to do.

I love my job!

Mr. Frink,
You are extremely generous! I feel great to see your machine because I feel I was somewhat a part in it. My next 'toy'.

I didn't know that was the case about the machines origin. If I had I wouldn't have bought one! Just kidding.

Rob has a lot of home made machines posted on his webpage, and he will sell you parts if you want to make your own machine, and your dad is something useless like chellist. I think that is pretty cool. I'm not sure I would have a grinder if this guy wasn't making them.

Are these old threads about the machine's design archived somewhere that one could look at them?

Mr. Frink,

How about re-posting the "making ot the KMG"...sort of a history of its creation.

I found the old posts (by doing a searh of your past posts) and all the picture links are broken.

I think it would be cool for all of us who aspire to have one some day.

Thanks

Ed

Guys, it looks like we've hijacked the bejeezus out of this thread and I think it's my fault. Sorry Kenny. :(

Our of respect for Kenny, the discussion here should be about his machine....

and for those interested in the origins of the KMG...we should start a new thread.

:D I'm such a party pooper!! :D

I remember the online building of that machine. I used to have the whole thread till my puter crapped out.
