I've seen a few threads asking about cheap alternatives or ways to make anvils and forges. I thought I'd share pics of my projects for possible ideas.

MGriffin, who got me started on this whole knife making thing, keeps telling me I should post them anyway.

Anvil is an I beam, truck springs, and a corner plate from a dozer. It works great; about 70% rebound and I can't hardly ding it. But man, it clangs really loud when you lay into it.

The forge is a propane tank and a bunch of scraps I put together.

They were a lot of fun to make, and now a blast to use!

Those are both sweet  The anvil has an artistic flair to it too. I'd just not use blast and propane in the same message :p

I like the anvil too, very cool and artistic looking. Nice forge too looks like it does the trick!

Very cool setup. The forge looks like it's running more than hot enough for forging and the anvil, like Will and Sam said "very artistic". As long as it works, Happy Hammering. :D

This setup is really nice. I have hammered on it quite a few times, and it is very nice to use.

Yeah, it clangs really loud because it is like a giant tuning fork. You probably can find some way to deaden the sound.

One idea that comes to mind is to sink the whole thing into a large tube, perhaps a paper tube for fence post settings, then fill it with cement. But you'll loose the cool look.

Another way might be to weld several braces between all the leaf springs and the center I-beam to help prevent vibration.

Either method would probably stop the excessive ringing.

Very cool set up man...

Or you could get some heavy duty rubber belts and wrap tightly around the middle of the springs to dampen the vibration.

I've tried several things to dampen it. I have rubber shims between the outside springs and the beam, magnets, etc; which help some. But it's not really that bad, only when you whale on it does it get pretty loud.

Thanks for the suggestions, I may try the supports b/n the spring and beam. I know the concrete would probably do the trick, but I couldn't bare to set all my wire-wheel work into cement!
