My idea for the perfect Spyderco

I just received my Spyderco JD Smith collaboration. I realize Spyderco has discontinued the use of micarta in it's knives but I love the feel and classy look of it. I'm a little concerned that the tip on my Smith may be a little fragile but I'm really impressed with it's handle ergonomics. Ok Sal, here it is: How 'bout a knife with a blade similar to the Endura, with a thin micarta handle similart to the Smith or Goddard? Such a knife would be worth it's weight in gold.

I really dislike anything with a micarta handle. Way too slippery when wet hands are trying to work with it.

I have a few micarta handled knives, they sit in drawers. The roughed up micarta is minimally acceptable for daily use.

Hope they keep the present configs and only offer micarta as an option.

interesting observation Brownie....

When my hands are dry, micarta slides around. When my hands are wet or sweaty, micarta "locks" into my hand.

I sandblasted my Calypso Jr. Micarta when it got scuffed up in the stone shop where I worked briefly. *Vastly* improved the texture of the handle. Scuffs/scratches are gone & now it's a "Tactical" Spyderco. Actually it's a great EDC because I really don't care anymore if I ding it up.

Linen micarta is really nice because it's got a good feel, but not as rough as G10. Very nice stuff. Polished G10 is pretty good stuff also.

It would be great if spyderco used some canvas micarta something like Busse or the LCC uses.

Copis:

The smooth micarta on the Wayne Goddard folder I had for awhile was a bear to keep a grip on with sweaty palms in the summer. As you mentioned, it was also slippery when dry as well. It seems worse for me when it was wet/damp though.

My Brown Bowie I designed and had made 12 years ago had the black polished micarta [ which was the popular handle material back then ] and I'm thinking of sending it to the maker to change it over to anything but micartas.

I did have a few of my design [ small boot types ] made for my nephew and myself with initials on the choils years ago. I had the maker use micarta [ it was still the rage then as well ] but rough/scruff it up and that seems to be more than acceptable at this point.

BTW-- all the knives I have designed and had executed by pros have been made in d-2 [ which came out of the mills in Jessup, Pa. ] to date.

A Police model with:

Canvas Micarta scales.
Dual stainless liners.
An ambidextrious pocket-clip.
A slightly thicker 5 inch blade.

How about a JD Smith, but with:

Dual steel liners, something like the Massad Ayoob.
SS bolsters at both ends, something like a Buck 110.
Sambar stag, jigged bone, or wood (oil finished not that plasticised stuff everyone is using nowadays) scales?
Ambi clip.

Better yet, a set consisting of a JD Smith and a Jess Horn C34 set up this way. :D :D

I can dream, can't I.

My Spyderco would have a nested liner like the Military, but with a compression lock. Rough G10 handles any color. Flat ground blade, about 3.5" to 3.25" long, with a stout tip like the Lil Temp.

I believe that's the paramilitary, but we still have to see the tip.

Wow. Everybody's got a perfect Spydie, it looks like. Mine is a Standard with dual liners and a VG-10 black blade. Or a silver blade and a blue handle. Or a black blade and a grey handle. Anything but the usual, really.
