I've had my Nano less then a month. One of the ear buds crackled a bit for a day or two and is now dead. I bought it online (Amazon) while visiting family in America (I live in Europe). Can I just bring it into an Apple retailer with a receipt and get a replacement. Something tells me it won't be that easy.

You'll probably have to send it back to Apple for a replacement. Have you considered getting a set of aftermarket earbuds? The Apple ones are uncomfortable and sound like crap. You can get a decent set of Sonys here for ~$30 US (not sure what that is there) or get a really nice set of Shures for $100-$150. I've got a set of Shure E2cs and really like them, if I had it to do over though I'd probably get the E3's, the design is less prone to clogging with ear wax and you can get custom molded sleeves for them. Best of luck.

I second that advice as a good set of ear buds makes the most difference. I have a pair of Sennhieser CX300's and really like them. They were only 90.00$
canadian.

Ditto on the CX300s. I've had mine for the last 8-9 months and they are MUCH better than the standard set that comes with the Nano. However, if you just want a replacement pair of the originals, I have an extra set I could send your way. Just email your address at: jorritsma "at" verizon "dot" net.

We had a problem with one of the ear buds. We walked into an Apple store and they just gave us a new pair. No big deal!

Try the Sennhieser MX400 or MX500 (the 400's with an inline volume control). They are the best bang for the buck in earbuds :D about 30CDN

Mine broke about a month after I got my Ipod too...I went for a aftermarket set!!!!!!!!

I've fixed some before. Just open them up and clip off the broken wire and resolder it to the small mound of solder it goes to.

Last night I found an old pair that I had laying around from a Panasonic ( ) CD player. ;) My thought right now is to try getting the Ipod buds replaced by Apple (not if it'll cost me even a nickel, though) and use these old ones until I can save the dough to buy a quality pair of replacement buds. Toys like this are so damn overpriced here in Europe that I'll probably just wait until my next business trip to the States and buy 'em there.

Last year I bought a cheap pair of buds at walmart for $1. They will tide you over until you get better ones.

Now what? Just TOSS THEM, go on www.head-fi.org and get REAL headphones..no use spending $200 on an ipod and deal with the CRAPPY stock buds...
My recommendation are ultimate ears. Not an ear bud, but in ear monitor (seals out noise and usually has a much better sound quality than regular buds)

GarageBoy good sugestion on head-fi. I frequent that forum quite a bit myself. The UE are nice but not round enough in their sound for my taste.

If you want some good cheep phones check out the ksc75's from Koss they are fantastic for the price, they easily compare to cans that cost 10 times as much.

Another winner, not earbuds though, are Audio Technica ATH-A900's. They dont require an amp and have a wonderful warm full sound with a decent soundstage. Stay away from Bose and really the anything below the shure e4c's from Shure I had the e2c's for a while and they were nice but they just lacked something for me and everything i have read about the e3c's is they have too much treble.

A great way to get into IEM's cheep is to pick up a pair of Altec Lansing IM716's. They are basically the same thing as the etymotic research er4's without the price tag.

If you have any questions feel free to drop me a PM...I love my headphones and am glad to talk about them.

Basically drop the broken ones though and get some real cans for that ipod.

I have a real nice pair I got at radio shack for 30$, excellent sound, good background noise cancel, and several sizes of earbud. Only complaint is that the rubber replaceable part falls out too easily and gets lost. Still, for 30$ it's a hell of alot better than the standard ones

I replaced my inno's earbuds with shure e2c's. incredable sound, my first set of earbuds that had a break in period. After about 5 hours of use bass response tripled. Nice passive sound isolation, flat frequency response, and secure fit with different sized tips. I know 100 us might sound steep for little earbuds, but these things are incredable!!

Ear buds? I recommend anything from Etymotic. I bought two sets of the $140 ER6 units for $72. each from Amazon. Fantastic sound for any portables like iPods or CD players. (and they FIT if you have a narrow ear canal - normal ear-buds just fall out of my ears)

Dont spend more money than the earbuds are worth mailing it back to apple only to get it back a while later. Just go out and buy some new sony earbuds. They arent expensive and sound better than the apple ones.

If you're close ... get an appointment at an Apple Genius Bar .. They will simply give you a new one ... Not sure about Europe, but where I live, it's not a big deal and they simply open up the cabinet and make it right. Barring being close to an Apple Store .. send them back .. they will take care of you.
