Last week I tired to shave some sticks up for kindling and use a cotton ball, shaved magnesium (stuff from the firesteel) and "strike" up a little campfire.

I got it to to smolder about 3 times but no dice. I was really po'ed. I went to YouTube and watched some survival fire videos and saw some good stuff.

I figured what I did wrong was to build it on the bare damp ground.

Well it's been raining since then and today I went back out in better weather for round 2.

This time I just used four bricks (not necessary but nearby) and built a dry floor for my fire pit by lacing twigs through the holes in the bricks. I also used a smidge of Vasoline on my cottonball this time. (really helps!)

I got the tinder and cottonball positioned just right and struck my first shower of sparks and voila - fire! :D

Great job! That izula is a fine looking knife. Mine has been my daily EDC since I got it. I have other knives, but they just don't have the same allure. (Pssst, they're jealous)

Another good way of getting tinder off the ground is to use a peice of dry bark like a bowl and place everything in there. You can even pick it up and move it to the main firepit area if you need to.
