MY JK Hiker Backup "kit"

I tend to outfit myself in layers when working or recreating and like to have my knives setup as one of the layers.

This is my Hiker Backup "kit"- setup as a necker (the neck lanyard has a small plastic loop that will break if I ever get it hung up hard taking a tumble). The sheath is wrapped w/ ~ 15' of 100# accessory cord w/ a 3/16" firesteel. I added a photon micro light and a fox whistle on the front side. On the rear there are two tinder tabs and two micropur tabs in a small bag. Everything is wrapped w/ a 2" ranger band.

The light can be worked through the ranger band while still on the sheath-just tilt the sheath up and squeeze the light. Both the light and whistle are attached via a short tether and can be pulled out from the ranger band.

hope to give it a little work out this weekend snowshoeing, I gave the matching Hiker a good work out a couple of weekends ago:

as practical as ranger bands are, they're ugly as sin compressing that beautiful leather sheath. That's the only reason I don't use them much...

Hi mtwarden -

Great ideas!

I never thought of using the inner-tube to capture and contain items to the sheath - but that would work really well I think.

I like the look of that blade - I can see that it would be very usable with the nicely sized handle compared to the smaller but capable blade. Add in Stomper's cool custom leather and you have a real winner.

Nice pictures of your kit - thanks for sharing them.

best regards -

I've been into necker kits ever since I saw Picts thread on his a while back. I dig that you've got yours wrapped with some additional cordage. Cool stuff

great setup, I'm really a fan of neckers, need to make me a kit for one of them, I like that knife too!!!!!!

thanks gents :)

I agree the ranger band isn't the prettiest thing, but it does a great job of containing the items- you can use it to gather tinder/kindling or even burn it- they burn for a long time

Ditto. I have a couple set-up that way too! I use inner-tube though... Cool set-up MT:thumbup:

ahh we're back :)

I agree a kydex sheath would be a nice addition, DIY......... maybe :)

I added a small MRE hot beverage bag (1/2 liter) to the rear, folds nice and flat- now I actually have something to add the water treatment tabs too :D
