Hi, guys! My name's Jake or Jacob whichever floats peoples' collective boats. I'm pretty new to knife making but am gaining knowledge and experience through my work and cutting out blanks for other knife makers at my job. I don't get to handle cutting as much now that I'm in the office side of things, but I'm personally trying to get into making knives as a fun hobby. My first project is just going to be a simple fixed blade that I'll hold onto (i.e. it will almost certainly come out terrible, and I'll be disgusted just looking at it let alone giving it to someone.) I'm really into elaborate knives, but I know it'll take a while to get to the point where I can make them, if ever! Anyways, I'm having a hard time finding a knife making club here in Tucson, and the nearest I know of is in Phoenix. Does anyone know of anything happening in Tucson? If not, I might just have to make a small one for the few of us that are involved in the area! I really like helping people out, but I don't have the knowledge or skill to feel comfortable with anything other than wood right now, so I'd like there to be a club for people like me out here, but if there isn't and there aren't people interested, I guess I'll be making that 2 hour drive to Phoenix, haha! I'd be happy to hear any tips for a new guy. I'm not worried about selling the knives, so no expectations from me there. I just want to make knives that I enjoy and am proud of! Thanks guys and gals. Let me know if you have any questions, and I look forward to being an active member here.

Welcome Jake. Make sure you check out the general knife makers forum, feel free to post questions about making knives, plenty of good folks to give you advice.

Hello Jake or Jacob. Welcome to the forums. I am Fish. As you can tell, I like water.

I've been to Tuscon. Not much water in Aridzona.

Haha, thanks, guys! Yeah, I've been trying to read up on plenty of stuff. I can also tell you like jabberwocky, fish. Tucson is pretty bad, but not as bad as Lake Havasu where I'm originally from. It gets super hot there.

Jabberwocky is literary genius.

If you want to get good at knife making, make a lot of knives and study the knives of other people. Most people here are very friendly and wiling to give good advice.

Thanks, Fish! I definitely want to get to the point where I can take raw stuff and turn it into a finished knife by the end of the year. I at least am already lucky enough to know how to shape and polish woods pretty well. Metal is a whole different beast though! I'm going to try and buy some stuff to make my own mosaic pins this week, haha. I'm sure they'll be a disaster, but I'm looking forward to trying and failing!

Keep a positive attitude. I'm sure the mosaic pins will come out better than expected.
