From my limited knowledge about khukuris that is probably a regimental piece, perhaps honorary, from some ghurka unit, likely for officers/dignitaries. Blade shape is interesting and resembles an Ang Khola. It is obviously made in India. Was this army buddy of your father a ghurka or serving in a ghurka unit? If not, then it is probably a shiny cheap showpiece with no user quality.

Welcome to the Cantina:) The experts will be along shortly to answer your questions. I'm going to pop this over to the non-HI related discussion board since it's not an HI piece.

I'm on my phone, but it looks to me like it's more of a show piece, but folks that know more about khuks that I do should be along:)

Once again, welcome:)

Lion's head usually means that it's more for show than go. These are usually range from very ornate and well made (aesthetically, that is. It's not really made for work) to sub par tourist fodder. You're looks very nice, but I would be willing to bet that the temper is next to nonexistent.

It has a nice story, though:) I would hang on to it since it's older and means something to you. My first khuk was a $20 piece of roughly made junk from India that I bought from a flea market. It was only 10 years later that I found out about REAL khuks and began another 10 year love affair with them:D

You've got a really nice piece that would look great on a wall or desk:) Enjoy it!

Thank you Steely-Gunzs, you would not believe the military collection he left me!!! about 25 bayonets and an assortment of rifles including a german G 41 (w} I miss these guys a lot ,they really were the greatest generation.

It is a tourist piece, sold in shops a bazaars as a momento of your trip to that part of the world.
For the most part they are decorative pieces, meant for display only.
While the odd one will be properly heat treated, most arent, and the handles almost always fail if used for chopping anything hard.

Welcome to the HI and forum, hepclass

Hi, some features of that basic design did exist in Indian bazarrs in ww2 {& earlier.}, but that particular one looks like early 1970s...
