Well...... in one swing, anyway...

I'm not a 2x4 chopper, generally... and not sure what constitutes a good cut but, man.... I am pretty happy with this. It is an 8.5" blade, 5160. Here is a shot of the geometry at .020",.040",.100",.140",.200" and .250"....

What has surprised you or made you proud, as a maker?

The "BRAG" thread.... lol

That is impressive for one swing. Looks like fir and not pine which makes it even more impressive. Good photograph - thanks for posting.

Showing off again, Rick? :D

Meeeeeee?.......... never......... well, maybe. You should have seen the smile on my face. Sad part is, I don't chop 2x4's so I really have nothing to compare to except Bladesport videos of cutting competitions.

Well, it is obviously defective. Just send it on over to me for disposal.

Nice cut, especially for a blade in the 8 inch range, that is also not shaped like a 4 inch tall tip heavy cleaver!

I'll try and get a video.... right now I don't even want to remove it... lol.

Rick:
I simply won't believe that your knives can't chop through a 2X4 in one swing. I'm certain the knife is more than capable of handling the job. Now the person handling the knife,... ? ? ? ? Well, next time don't let your 90 year old next door neighbor woman do the cutting.

I'm looking for hammer marks where you drove it into the wood but there aren't any. What would Sherlock Holmes conclude?

Impressive, to say the least. I especially like that pretty blue striped finish you put on the blade after your torture test. ;-)

Rick, that is very cool! Nice swing with a great blade buddy!

I did accomplish one thing recently.......a couple makers here have been pushing me to go for a tapered tang. I am usually hesitant to try something that may end with me throwing away a nice piece of steel, but I know I need to push myself, so I went for it recently. I was pretty happy with the results. I want to go thinner next time, but this was a good start and it was a good confidence booster.

Here is a video I did to try and reapeat the chop...... close but no cigar.... glad I got pics of this one... lol.

Hey... gimme a break... I wouldn't have made this thread if I did these kind of cuts everyday. Perhaps it was a fluke.... I'll take it anyway I can get it!

Very impressive! Even if it was a fluke.

I've only seen machetes and swords make cuts like that on a 2x4. Let alone a 1/4" thick knife; that is a lot of steel to wedge into a piece of wood.

that's pretty awesome

Take a peek at the end grain of that test piece; I wonder if you were going close to parallel to the rings on one corner of the board, and more across them on the other. Regardless, obviously the knife can cut. Cool!

I want to go thinner next time, but this was a good start and it was a good confidence booster.

Lookin' good so far Jon. When you start feeling cocky, match the final tang thickness to your edge thickness. :D
