My Knife Case Runneth Over

The following is an article I posted on foodieforums.com about a kitchen knife travelling case I just purchased. I thought I would share it with y'all as well.

Well, actually it doesn't (runneth over) and it probably never will. I was really looking for a knife roll to take with me on a beach house vacation in Sunset Beach NC in a couple of weeks in order to carry my (new) Shun santoku, (new) Shun boning knife, Henckel's 6" utility and 3" paring, maybe the Henckel's steak knives, probably the Pampered Chef bread knife, meat thermometer, a couple of whisks, 3 or 4 shrimp P/D'ers ('cuz I'll be buying right off the boats and eating it a couple of times a day - cheaper than hamburger), and maybe a few other gadgets.

I checked a bunch of online sites and decided to buy a Shun Professional Knife Case - mostly because of my recent fascination with all things KAI, like Shun and Kaji knives (thanks largely to thombrogan, you bastard - you're costing me a lot of money) and Zero Tolerance folding knives (thanks to Alton Brown Feasting [lutefisk] On Asphalt with his ZT-0302). So it comes yesterday and I immediately notice that the box is enormous. I open it up and am confronted by this knife case that seems the size of a small suitcase. It's a little intimidating with its 17 slots, velcro everywhere, nylon straps, mesh bag, etc., all layed out in its 20" by 36" expansivity when opened up, but a few minutes of playing around with it and laying in my equipment to see what it looks like and I'm starting to understand why this thing has such a high degree of kitchen cred.

It's a beautifully constructed case with stiffened heavy-duty nylon walls embellished with leather highlights. Your knives are not falling out of this case with the velcro fasteners and enclosed ends, either. This is a high quality item, and my initial confusion has been replaced by a nice feeling of satisfaction and knowlege that this case and I are going to be together for a long, long, time and who knows what delicious meals will result or where they will be produced.

Now I just have to buy more knives to fill it up. Oh crap - my wife is going to kill me with one of them - I just know it. ;)

Yep, I saw Alton on TV waiving that ZT folder around and I wondered what it was. I knew he is a knife nut.

Thanks for the review of the knife case. It sounds cool enough!
