I have never considered myself to be a knife collector. And yet I do have a collection of knives. I like knives but have only bought a few for my daily pocket use over the years. Knowing that I like knives though, my family has cheerfully given me knives as gifts over those same years. I have a cigar box full of unremarkable folders and another box of fixed blades. Bucks and Schrades etc. None of them what I would have wanted to lay out money for. But Ii can't liquidate them and use the money to get something expensive and desirable (Sebenza?) because they were gifts.

That's why I will only gift knives to (1) people who definitely want one and (2) don't know enough about them to have specific personal preferences.'

Some of the knives I’ve been gifted that I wouldn’t have bought have remained, but others have simply been regifted, mostly to friends and their kids to beat on and enjoy till they see the light and get better steel!

I believe you need to rethink gifted knives. Gifts of clothing wear out, ugly ties go to Goodwill. Gifts of consumables get used up. Why do you think gifted knives have to hang around forever? Sell some (if they’re sellable) and buy something you’ll really enjoy. Life’s too short to be burdened with boxes of knives you don’t use and enjoy.

A twenty year old Buck 112 doesn't bring much, even if it is unused in th4e belt pouch. Same for the twenty-five year old Buck 110. Same for the Schrade "Sharp Finger" from 1996.

The only gift knife I have ever sold off was a still new-in-the-box Spyderco "Spider wrench" multi tool. It was so complex and over engineered that they only made them for a while. Turns out there is a small cult following and I managed to e-Bay it off for $300 a few years ago.

You absolutely can liquidate them or even regift them. The only knives I was given that I wouldnt consider selling or giving are ones that my father, grandfather or others owned and used for years.

The good thing they don't take up much space. I have friends who collect Guitars, they take up a lot of space, and don't get me started on cars. (I had to go to the Betty Ford center for car addiction) thats a joke that shows my age.

I have a little knitted squid doll on a shelf in my closet.

I do not do stuffed animals. In fact I kinda hate keeping objects around that just serve to take up space. But when I see it, I don't think about the silly doll. I think about the person who gave it to me.
