Hello everyone, I've recently purchased my first knife. I did some research and ended up getting the Becker BK2 :). I'm pretty happy and saw a lot of the mods that everyone here has done. I guess this thread would be kind of like a journal of some sorts.

Anyway, not too long after getting the BK2, I wanted to strip the coating off. When I got one side off, I noticed there was some sort of patina (is that what it's called?) around the pommel (hopefully I'm not butchering this. I'm trying, I promise!). Is that something I should be concerned about? I doubt it, but just wanted to run it by you guys.

After this, I want to convex the blade, but I'll have to do more homework since I don't want to get ahead of myself. I'm also looking at the grizzly outdoors horizontal kydex sheath. Has anyone used this sheath specifically? I know there's one thread about it, but the last time that OP was online was two years ago. So I can't really ask him about it.

I'm also thinking about getting a BK11 for EDC. That'll be later though.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Becker knives!
The bk2 is a wise choice. You'll love the 11 as well.
I wouldn't worry too much about the birthmark. I've seen others with similar markings.
Test out that V edge long and hard before you convex it
I personally prefer the V over a convex edge.
Enjoy it. And beat it like there's no tomorrow. It'll just ask for more!

Thanks Jonny. I'm glad I don't have to worry about the birthmark since that was my main concern. I'll be using the V edge on it for a while before I can mentally say I'm ready to convex it. While we're talking about edges. Is there any formal way to sharpen and care/maintain it? I've searched on caring for knives, but all I've seen is wipe it clean, wash with water and some mild soap, and wipe mineral oil on it. Is there a technique? Or am I thinking to hard.
As for sharpening, I am totally lost on that. Stones, sandpaper, the Spyderco Sharpmaker, and strops are another world for me. I've seen people use 180 grit sandpaper to start and I've seen another guy start with 2000 grit, then a black strop, then green. I'll be spending hours making sure I understand the art of sharpening.

Also, has anyone tried that grizzly-outdoors horizontal sheath? I'm sure it can't be horrible, but I just want to get some opinions on it.

Yeah man, you're over-thinking it. Lol
Use it hard, wipe her down and then put a light coat of oil on it. I use olive oil on mine since I use them for food prep. It works fine.
I started my sharpening on a norton med/fine stone. The most important part is keeping and maintain the same angle when sharpening. It takes some practice, but its a good skill to have. I've since moved on to the Sharpmaker. It's absolutely fool proof and I get my knives screaming sharp.
As for sheaths, we have a few good makers here on the forum.
Keep browsing BK&T and you'll be up to speed in no time.
Who knows, hang around long enough and you may just reach the elusive Beckerhead status. :D

Thanks for the welcome madhappy. I hope I get to use this knife as much as possible!

Jonny, dang it haha thanks man. I'll finish stripping the paint and coat it with some mineral oil. I'll look into that Sharpmaker since it has a sharpening angle of 15 and 20 degrees per side, which is perfect for the BK11 and BK2, respectively.

I'll look around for the sheath makers. I'm looking more for kydex material since I can't afford leather right now. Thanks again guys!

Hey OP, great choice for a first knife. With edges, the V edge does great for most anything bushcraft related. I use a food grade lube on all my knives, cause I use them to slice my food. As far as sheaths are concerned, I highly reccomend The 710 custom sheaths. JD does amazing work, and its crazy affordable.

Heres some BK-2 porn for ya lol.

(that's what she said)

Sorry Jon, I couldn't help it ;)

tabas07, welcome to the insanity. Helpful tip: post pics of that birthmark! We love seeing oddball things about the knives we cherish.

Welcome! The710 does great kydex work, but if you want leather it might be cheaper than you think.

Welcome to the forum, it doesnt seem like that long ago when I was new here.

BK2 seems to be one of the more popular beckers as a first purchase, it was mine as well. Its sort of my If-The-World-Ends kind of knife. Personally though, I prefer the BK9 when I go out on my backpacking trips, but you will find that everyone here has their own favorite becker and soon you will have one too.

As far as learning to sharpen your knife goes, you should probably start on knives you don't really care about because you are going to make mistakes. I started out on my wife's kitchen knives & didn't move on to anything else til I got good enough to take a dull one and get it back to shave sharp in a few minutes.

Convexing is a whole different animal. I bought a Work Sharp Knife & Tool sharpener. It is fantastic! But if you want to save some money, look up DerekH's post on how to do it using a couple of fingernail files.

Wow thanks everyone for the welcome! Out of all the forums I've joined, I haven't seen one so welcoming. Now on a manly note haha..I'll check out The710, Azwelke, and GODSPEED. I saw the Skystorm leather sheaths and I would love to get the BK-2 Modular Scout sheath, but I'll have to hold off on that for now.

bsmith_shoot: Is that sheath from The710?

rkmoore: Good idea. I have a few folding knives that were given to me over the years that I could work on. I wouldn't mind working on those since they feel pretty cheap. I'll look into that post from DerekH. I've always heard about the mousepad method, but never the fingernail files.

Hopefully those two pictures work. You can see the birthmark on both sides.
