I just wanted to share my experience....and lousy photography skills....concerning the regrind of my Small Sebenza by Tom Krein.

Sent the knife to Tom on Friday, November 2nd and received it back yesterday Saturday the 10th. I expected a couple weeks and best and was floored when Tom called on Tuesday and said it was going out the next day.

I've attached a couple photos but they don't come close to doing justice to the amazing job that Tom did with this knife. I was always amazed with the fit and finish of this knife but it wasn't the "perfect" knife.....until now.

Excellent product...excellent service....excellent communication....I'm very impressed.

The only debate now is what to send Tom next.

Two thumbs up!

Steve

Sorry if its a stupid question but how has he reground it? I cant tell from the pictures (i am on opera mini on my phone).

it's awesome! tell us how it cuts now? I never really liked the thicker convex edge of the sebenzas but with this regrind, I bet I could like that blade again, lol....

Sorry...I wish I had taken "before" pictures.

He basically thinned out the blade to eliminate the thick portion behind the cutting edge.

Maybe Tom will pipe in and give some more detail. We discussed over the phone what I would use the knife for...daily carry...edc....kinda stuff and then he recommended an edge tolerance of 0.010 to 0.015. He said it ended up 0.012.

OH MY GOD...DOES IT CUT!

I just sliced through a Post-it not like it wasn't even there. Little to no effort. Simply amazing! It's a completely different blade now.

I do need to note the disclaimer though that the edge will be slightly more fragile. I won't be burying the tip in wood and won't be prying staples out of boxes with it....but it's worth the compromise.

I just bought a PE Para Military that I thought was going to be my EDC knife...I might have been wrong. The Sebenza is definately a little more sheeple friendly. We shall See!

Steve,
Glad I was able to hook you up! Good to hear you are happy with it.

Heres what I did. On the Sebies I regrind them with a 14" wheel. This is about as big as I can go. It looks like they are ground on a 10-12" wheel at the factory.

I took your knife to .012" and then increased the sharpening angle.

To do this I have to remove the thumb stud. CRK's said it would need to go back to them for it to stay in place, but so far the two I have done are holding up well.

Thanks!

Tom

I'm more than just happy! I'm impressed....and when it comes to customer service I'm a very hard guy to impress.

Thanks again!

To give you a different visual perspective, when the Sebenza comes from Chris Reeve Knives, the blade has a tumbled finish look. Now anywhere you can see grit (brushed finish) marks on the major bevel is where Tom worked his magic.

Cheers.

This is what I have been thinking about. I have a small classic Sebenza I would like Tom to do. Mr. krein, I have sent you an email about this.I think this would make my Sebenza a great cutter. Steve, I am jealous.

I have a sebenza myself, so i can see where work has been done. As i understand it they come with a hollow primary grind and a fairly thick secondary bevel. I was just wondering what has been changed, but now i know that the hollow grind has been flattened out a bit and the edge has been slimmed down. Nice work, i would like to do something similar to mine.

It greatly improves the cutting efficiency, and makes it easier to sharpen as well. Tom did a picture perfect job on mine.

Unbelievable. It makes the blade look wicked too! I asked Tom to do my HD-7. That man can grind! Thanks for posting!!
