My co-worker (goes by "smokeyokc". He mostly post on gun forums.) and I decided to try to make our own kydex sheaths. Lots of Whiskey was involved so we didn't get much done and other shenanigans ensued. :D

Here are some pics.

I decided that my street beat would be the guinea pig.

Thats not all we did! I wanted to abuse the hell out of two of my CS knives.
I brought along my Rajah II and my Recon I. Smokeyokc has a big tree in his backyard that made a great target for knife throwing. Now I know folders should never be thrown but the Tri-ad locks on these things are bomb proof.

They didn't land every single time and a few times they bounced back. One time I guess I didn't move fast enough...damn crown royal....:o

Thank you! Im not all the way done yet. I dont know how all those little pits got in there but I guess ill have to sand it down. Also I dont know if I should use screws or rivets to lock it up.

when i saw the first pic, i thought to myself damn thats actually pretty good job, but then i scrolled down and saw the one you made lol.....it looks like you left your knife with the sheath on in the microwave.

Are you using polyeurethane foam for molding the sheath like you should? It almost looks like you used a towel or something that can bind up and make those indentations, or maybe a foam thats not heat resistant enough and is melting. A poor man's kydex press can be made with some 2x4 cutoffs, a door hinge, and some small pieces of 1" polyurethane foam. Stick that all in a vise while the kydex is hot and you're good to go. That's how I've been making mine until I find the time to weld up a real press.

I'm confused. Which of those two sheaths is the one you made, and which is from the factory? I'm also confused as to why no one else seems to be confused about this. Did I miss something?

In either case, I like both of those sheaths—each for different reasons.

Edit: Never mind. I went back and now realize that the one without rivets is the home-made sheath. Congratulations. If it holds the knife safely and securely, that's all that really matters. I DO like the fact that your sheath doesn't look like a kydex sheath. Really. You might want to experiment, and add even more "texture" instead of making your sheaths look like all the others.

buck, you got a good form. The dimples are from getting the Kydex way too hot. My guess is that the core is worse than the visible dimples, which could lead to cracking. Next time, just dial the heat back.

Scott, the top picture is the factory sheath.

Have you not yet added rivets—or is it glued?

I make my kydex sheaths like you did—by folding it around the spine instead of using two separate pieces. I do not use rivets. I simple glue it shut with plastic pipe glue. Rough up surface, wipe with primer, wipe with glue. Clamp. Done.

That "texture" is structural weakening. As I said, the core is likely in pretty bad shape, and will likely crack easily.

Oh ok. I thought maybe the foam was messed up. Thanks for the advice.

bucktwofive i certainly enjoyed the throwing session. definite ly is a plus for the strength of the triad lock. i thought the sheaths were pretty decent. it's great to see you younins blasting along thanks dennis

Less heat + more whiskey is the key...

i was gonna say ALOT LESS whiskey.

at first i didn't get it, i saw the other sheath and thought, "wow, helluva first attempt" then i noticed the little piece of lava rock or whatever it was LOL. dude, next attempt, drink AFTER. i'm not saying don't drink and throw folders, that sounds fun, i'm just saying make the next sheath sober :D
