icing everywhere but no snow since that fluke october storm.

not sure what mineral is in the soil that caused this birch tree to turn bluish-green.

sorry for the blurry pics...i learned this slick way of hanging tools on branches without using/undoing knots from iawoodsman.

brought along a new saw to test out. see my review here: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/912513-review-stanley-fatmax-saw

crazy efficient and cheap too! after a few minutes i have more than enough firewood for an overnighter.

035_009.jpg

another tip i learned from iawoodsman - using a forked tree as a sawing horse/brace.

035_010.jpg

base camp...no camp fire since i was just there for the day to test out the new saw and stockpile firewood for a future overnighter.

035_011.jpg

lunch break...gotta have knife pron!

035_012.jpg

&*%@! my izula bit me right at the finger joint when i was scraping birch bark. my first thought was "not my trigger finger!" then i remembered i'm a lefty :p

035_013.jpg

this is the izula i won from esee's snowshoe contest earlier in the year. not sure if the izula was mad at me because it was no longer brand new or it took me months to finally use it...i have a strict policy of no safe queens :D

035_014.jpg

all patched up...this was only the 3rd or 4th time in my whole 33-yr life (that i can remember) being cut before...i guess it really is a keeper.

rocking my goofy hat for the day.

035_017.jpg

nice pile of firewood for a future overnighter.

running out of daylight so broke up camp and headed for the nearby stream to enjoy the sunset.

035_020.jpg

035_021.jpg

on the way to the stream i found another skull - any idea what kind of animal it was? if that's a chupacabra, i'm not going back there again :p

035_022.jpg

spent the last hour of daylight next to the stream. 2011 was a busy year for me - 19 hikes (including 2 overnighters and one 2-nighter) and 15+ mountain bike outings. this year i'll do a lot more multi-day trips and less day hikes probably...thank you everyone for all the stuff i've learned!

Thanks for the post. You have found yourself a neat spot there. And you have a lot more cuts to come before you get it all down pat. Trust me on that one.

Whew! You're lucky I don't think it was a chupacabra skull... They have silver teeth. Great pics, looks like a good time for sure.

Nice pics, really nice. Now I finally get it, my aversion to axes. I'm afraid of laying my leg or foot open in a remote spot. I couldn't figure out why I don't mind farting around with a hawk and why your saw seemed so attractive. A base peripheral concern about an Axe accident. And the weight factor. I guess I'm just an Axe ninny.
:D

thanks. i have a lot of relatives that are nurses so my first aid kit is well stocked. glad i got to use my kit - i can now honestly say i have no un-used gear at all :p

Great Photos and gear too

Thanks for posting Bro

so it's not a chupacabra...might be the jersey devil!

Beautiful scenery.

indeed. that's why i find myself hiking there often.

Pretty sure that's a cow skull. Nice photo's thanks JV3!

thanks! i guess the other skull i found close to it on my 2-nighter is a deer. strange though to find a cow skull there and it's too out of the way spot too for teens drinking beer to lug it in...satanic rituals i'm thinking. i'll bring garlic next time too :D

:D

thanks. yeah, i'd still use my axe but for serious wood processing i'll revert to the saw now. i was tired by that time and in a split second wasn't focused and bam, an izula bites another victim.
