icing everywhere but no snow since that fluke october storm.
not sure what mineral is in the soil that caused this birch tree to turn bluish-green.
sorry for the blurry pics...i learned this slick way of hanging tools on branches without using/undoing knots from iawoodsman.
brought along a new saw to test out. see my review here: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/912513-review-stanley-fatmax-saw
crazy efficient and cheap too! after a few minutes i have more than enough firewood for an overnighter.
another tip i learned from iawoodsman - using a forked tree as a sawing horse/brace.
base camp...no camp fire since i was just there for the day to test out the new saw and stockpile firewood for a future overnighter.
lunch break...gotta have knife pron!
&*%@! my izula bit me right at the finger joint when i was scraping birch bark. my first thought was "not my trigger finger!" then i remembered i'm a lefty
this is the izula i won from esee's snowshoe contest earlier in the year. not sure if the izula was mad at me because it was no longer brand new or it took me months to finally use it...i have a strict policy of no safe queens
all patched up...this was only the 3rd or 4th time in my whole 33-yr life (that i can remember) being cut before...i guess it really is a keeper.
rocking my goofy hat for the day.
nice pile of firewood for a future overnighter.
running out of daylight so broke up camp and headed for the nearby stream to enjoy the sunset.
on the way to the stream i found another skull - any idea what kind of animal it was? if that's a chupacabra, i'm not going back there again
spent the last hour of daylight next to the stream. 2011 was a busy year for me - 19 hikes (including 2 overnighters and one 2-nighter) and 15+ mountain bike outings. this year i'll do a lot more multi-day trips and less day hikes probably...thank you everyone for all the stuff i've learned!
